Nintendo Of America Boss Wants Grand Theft Auto V On Wii U

Posted on Monday, November 19 @ 09:50:45 Eastern by Alex_Osborn
Our good friend Reggie Fils-Aime over at Nintendo of America has made it clear that despite the fact that Grand Theft Auto V is currently only in the works for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, there's a good chance that Rockstar will eventually bring it to the Wii U.

"The folks there have said very nice public comments about the Wii U," he told MTV. "In the end, it is Nintendo's responsibility to have a large installed base, to have development tools that help the developers and publishers create great content, and essentially create an environment where teams like Rockstar can bring their very best content to our platform, and if we do that hopefully the very best content throughout the entire industry will show up on Wii U."

Alright then Reggie, you'd best get to work. There are loads of third-party developers that you're going to need to win over if you want solid support for the Wii U in the future.

Yeah, Reggie! Get to work! Seriously, though, if the Wii U was able to pull in more developers that cater to mature gamers, I'd definitely pick one up.

I agree. Reggie needs to be hitting the pavement, drumming up support for the Wii U fast. They don't want to repeat the 3DS thing, so if he can get meetings with these developers (any developers really), he's gotta do it.

Honestly, if the Wii U doesn't get GTA V, it'll have already failed.

Because the Wii failed horribly after it didn't get GTA IV.

No, I mean in the sense that any semblance of "we're for hardcore gamers too" will do a slow motion dive out of a window.

fair point. If Nintendo wants to have cred with the "core gamers", they need to bring the same AAA titles as the other consoles. I follow you. But I'm not sure that Nintendo really cares about that, as long as they can cash in on the semi-casual crowd.

Who knows what will happen. Maybe the Wii U will get a half-assed port like what the PC gets.

I wonder what ways the Wii U could use the tablet controller to improve the GTA experience.

I supposed it'll be like Chinatown Wars on the DS with the mini-map at the tablet along with other non essential information.

I guess I meant cool ways not lame ways to take up space and superficially utilize decent hardware.

I can see a GTAV Wii U port being largely identical to the 360/PS3 version, mainly favoring the Pro controller.

As for the GamePad, I think Rockstar should make the tablet interface completely optional, but provide GPS and Search functions very similar to those found in actual tablets and smartphones. It should be a polished, and fully functional addition to the core gameplay.

But of course, it should include that GTA sense of humor, perhaps a bitingly sarcastic, provocative, even at times suggestive parody of Apple's Siri to narrate your directions and inquiries, make funny comments on where you're going or what you're looking for. Maybe even break the fourth wall (since the device is in YOUR hands after all, not your character's).

He only wants this because he realizes it actually hurt sales when GTA 3 and San Andreas weren't on GameCube, and GTA4 wasn't on Wii. Nintendo fanboys can deny it all they want, "We don't need your GTA!" The sad truth is, you do.
