Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Nintendo Reportedly Combining Console And Handheld Hardware Divisions

Posted on Wednesday, January 16 @ 07:46:52 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Ever since Nintendo released the GameBoy, the company has operated almost like two separate entities, one in the console space and the other in the realm of handhelds. According to a report from Nikkei, that will be changing very soon, as the Big N is planning to restructure, bringing together its console and handheld hardware divisions.

A translation of the report explains:

In an effort to create more innovative and attractive products, Nintendo Co. will combine the development segments for its home video game consoles and handheld game devices.

The decision comes on the heels of recent releases of the Nintendo 3DS portable system in February 2011 and the Wii U home console last month. With more people using their smartphones and tablets for entertainment via the Internet, including games and videos, Nintendo aims to come up with next-generation game systems that will turn heads.

The restructuring will allegedly take place in February, and will combine 130 employees from Nintendo's console division with 150 from its handheld branch to form a single, unified development team. "The two teams will eventually be integrated and the segment will be organized by function, such as circuits, mechanisms and design," the report adds.

What do you think of this supposed move by Nintendo? Does this mean we might see more unity between the 3DS and Wii U? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I am not sure how this will pan out. It could create more unified products, but it could also cause strain to groups within the company trying to work on multiple things at once.

Maybe they'll release a successor to the Wii U in two years that features a handheld as the controller instead of the GamePad. That way, you can game on the go, and at home with the same system/controller.

IMO, that's where Nintendo could find the most success, since the hardware wouldn't necessarily need to be a powerhouse with a feature like that.

That way Sony and MS would be fighting for the living room, and Nintendo could combine its strengths in the handheld space with their consoles to form a separate segment that is more equipped to counter the growth of tablets.

Yes, Nintendo, you should definitely hire me as CEO, CFO, and janitor.

Couldn't Sony do this with the Vita + PS4?

This makes sense... I can't help but think when I'm playing on the Wii U that my monitor and gamepad feel like a really really big DS.

They threw as many 3DS parts as they could into the Wii U controller, so I guess this make sense. I think the real reason they are doing this is to simply save money.
