Nintendo to Announce New Hardware, 3DS-Related?

Posted on Thursday, September 1 @ 09:55:25 Eastern by

Only a month ago, the 3DS was in desperate need of life support. Nintendo responded with their version of a defibrillator, a price drop to $169.99. It seems to have worked, too. 3DS sales picked up immediately, and Nintendo calmed rightfully-upset early adopters with some free games. (Free games are available now.)

It seems as though Nintendo still has some tricks up their sleeve, but it's not clear if that's necessarily a good thing, yet. All will be known soon enough, as Nintendo is holding a pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference in Japan that they're calling "Nintendo 3DS Shinseihin Happyoukai" (ニンテンドー3DS 新製品発表会), which roughly translates into Nintendo 3DS "new product presentation".

New product? Does that mean that there's already going to be a 3DSi or 3DS XL? Maybe a 3DS without 3D? Or even that rumored 3DS second "circle pad" attachment that usually accurate 01Net rumored a couple weeks ago? I don't think even Nintendo knows for sure what the right move is.

Whatever it may be, we'll be glued to the internet waiting and watching for this announcement when it happens on September 13th in Japan (which will still be September 12th for us). Tokyo Game Show kicks off just two days later.

Oh jeez. Oh well.... not the first time. I bought the original DS as part of the Mario Kart bundle and upgraded to the Lite. Couldn't be bothered to upgrade again after that though.

I doubt it's a redesign, I don't think they'd be so stupid after they just won back some audience with the price drop to alienate them again with a hardware revision. But even on the offchance that it is, I think i'd rather have the free games and, if history is any indication, I'll prefer the original design to the Lite version anyway.

A new attachment for the 3DS? That would be fine. New, possibly awesome games announcement? Perfectly fine. But if Nintendo thinks I am upgrading my DS a SECOND time in less than a year, they can go pound salt. I am still kinda sore about the GBA SP being announced after I got my original GBA for Christmas the year prior.

Of course, Nintendo might have named it that to get everyone's attention. If so, well played Nintendo PR.
