No New Xbox or PS4 in 2012

After weeks of "anonymous sources" claiming to have information on the Xbox 360 and PS3's successors, execs from Microsoft and Sony from France have both spoken out against these claims saying that no new consoles are due this year.

When asked about Microsoft debuting a new Xbox console at E3, Cedrick Delmas of Microsoft France1 said:
We're in an industry that talks a lot, that likes telling stories. I am not convinced that things will happen this year. The Xbox 360's cycle is not over at all. The proof is that we haven't price cut this year.

Afterward, what will happen at E3, it's still too early to say. What's certain is that there will be nothing new in 2012. If we wanted to counter Nintendo, we would have to be in a position to release something immediately, and that is not at all the case.
Philippe Cardone, CEO of PlayStation France2, was less specific about Sony's plans:
It's true that there are many rumors, but I could tell you anything. The Wii is pressed for time because it is in decline. In our case, we have a lot less pressure. We were the last to leave the PS3, it will probably be the last to announce something.
Even with these strong words from Microsoft and Sony, don't rule out new consoles just yet. We wouldn't be surprised if the French branches of these primarily American and Japanese companies weren't exactly "in the know". Or it could be that because they're French, they're avoiding any chance of what they say being construed as "fighting words".

No reason to think there will be one right now, since Microsoft is banking in the Kinect for another two years at least, and Sony has no reason for a PS4 to come out yet other than to compete with Nintendo.

Hell, Nintendo is the only one that really can afford to make a new console right now anyway.

The hand held market isn't as sure a thing as it was when the DS was in it's prime. Hot or not, there is more competition there now from Tablets and Mobile Phones, in addition to the Vita, than there ever was before. I don't really doubt the 3DS will be a profitable venture for Nintendo; however, it would be extremely foolish to self relegate themselves to the hand held market, thereby abandoning the console market. In order to stay relevant in the console market, they need to AT LEAST be able to provide HD level resolution, if nothing else. I'm playing through Skyward Sword right now. Amazing game, but it looks dated. You can definitely see the limits of the Wii hardware.

Think about what it took for the 3DS to get hot though. I was working in a local used game store when the 3DS came out and we sold perhaps 2 of them over the course of a few months. It had to have a major price drop and wait on a second wave of games to save it from oblivion. The Wii's sales are stagnating if not outright dropping and the handheld market only breeds fiercer and fiercer competition even with Nintendo's edge.

I agree Rinnon. I've recently purchased a 3DS. I think it is a great system overall. Its solid and provides plenty of features. As amazing a it is, the VITA is sure to pack a competative punch to the 3DS. As for the Sony and Microsoft next release, I believe it will come some time after the WII U, and again through Nintndo's performance to not rely on its dated graphics, but aspects such as game play.

Has there been any discussion of a dedicated Microsoft hand held?
