"Not Everything on the Disc Is the Product", Says Epic about On-Disc Gears 3 DLC

Posted on Friday, November 4 @ 10:55:04 Eastern by

At $60, games can get really expensive. Sure, if you play 100 hours worth of multiplayer, you're only paying $0.60 an hour, but we're no fools. You've got a disc in your hands, so shouldn't you have access to everything?

Not so, says Epic Games. Gears of War 3's Horde Command Pack launched on Xbox Live for $10 but only netted buyers a 1.4 MB download. With new maps, skins, and weapons in the pack, gamers realized they had just paid for content that was already residing on the physical media they'd been using this entire time.

Speaking with Kotaku, Gears of War 3 Executive Producer Rod Fergusson reasoned that the DVD you bought at the store doesn't entitle you to everything on it:

We're not saying that everything on the disc is the product. The disc is another delivery mechanism. I can definitely see the counter-discussion.

We had begun DLC packs early enough, and with the extension to our schedule, it meant we had that stuff done before we shipped. One of the concerns was we would have to have people download a compatibility pack because, with a big emphasis on the extra characters and weapons skins, that whole thing is a vanity play.

Epic says they're not the real bad guys because at least they didn't pad the download size and lie to gamers who purchased the DLC. It was plain as day that the Horde Command Pack didn't involve much data.

We felt it was a win/win, because no one is going to have to download anything huge when the DLC comes out. I think the thing that makes it muddy for people is when it's on the disc. We could have left it off and said "Hey, here's another disc."

To me, it all sounds like a lot of explaining away the fact that gamers bought and paid for a piece of media, been playing it this whole time, and instead of giving the first bit of DLC away for free (or just including it in the game in the first place) Epic Games and Microsoft decided to get greedy, wall off the extraneous content, and charge people $10 to interact with it.

That's bullshit.

And if someone were to gain free or early access to said DLC on the disc they paid for it would likely be called piracy. What are we really paying for these days? I think companies want it so that we pay for the use of their digital media but never really own any of it.

...which is exactly how it's been for decades. You've *never* owned any of the data on any game disc *ever*. All you've ever bought is the box, manual, a chunk of plastic, and a license telling you what data on that chunk of plastic you're allowed to use.

That is a load of crap. If I buy a game at a store, everything on the disc, I should own.

That IS bull ****. As far as I'm concerned, games have a certain development cycle. When that cycle is finished, a game is produced, and we go out and buy it. If we want more content, the developers go off on a new cycle, create extra content, and we pay them for that extra time. If content was developed in the first place, what exactly are we paying them for?
It's getting to the point now that I won't buy a game at full price, I'll wait until it's discounted and then I'll pay the extra for the DLC, so I end up paying the initial price, but getting everything I should have first time round. It's a pretty screwed system I think.

That epic guy is absolutely right. You don't pay 60 bucks for a game because it takes up an entire 4.8GB DVD; you pay because you think the content that 60 bucks gets you is worth more than the money. It is absolutely insane to believe in this age that developers don't start working on DLC (or even finish making the DLC) for a game before it is even released. I think it is a pretty shitty system too, but it's the developers choice to decide what content comes with the game and what you have to pay extra for, and they didn't mislead anyone about that (as far as I know).

We talking about the same company that charges you for Facebook on your console and online multiplayer?
    Why are you even surprised?

I'm also doing what Zpyder says, in fact, I'm getting Batman: Arkham ASYLUM now because the GotY thing includes DLC, and I'm gonna wait for the GotY edition of both Arkham City and Skyrim, won't pay a penny for DLC.

To me, DLC should be included in the purchase of the game, if that's too much trouble, then don't put it, if we get a shorter game because of that the reviews will point it out and people may be discouraged to pay full price for it, so the publisher won't get a load of money on release date, thus making him focus on developing a good and long enough game to start with, and gamers win.

Also the same company who charged you for xxx gigabytes of hard drive space on your console, then conveniently fail to mention that a (fairly hefty when you only had a 20 gb 360) portion of that hard drive space will be occupied by their own operating system.

So what would happen if we applied their logic to....let's say pizza delivery? You sit down, open the box and see the pizza whole and as ordered. What you then see is the notice attached to the top of the box, "Thank you for choosing Pizza Place, please login to www.pizzaplace/toppingregistry.com to access your pizza toppings. We remind you that eating unlicensed toppings is a federal offense. Thank you."

What we got for 800 MSP is a complete joke anyways, 2 'new' maps, a 3rd map that's from GoW2 reskinned, 3 boring 'new' characters and 2 weapon skins that should have been free to begin with and set to achievement unlockability.

I said it many times before, DLC is ruining gaming.

Boy, DLC is getting worse and worse. Its actually gotten to the point where there locking out stuff on the 60 dollar game disc that we paid for and charging us extra to use it?! Developers should take a hint from Valve the first Portal 2 DLC came out recently and it's a lot more worthwhile than this, and it's FREE.

"We had begun DLC packs early enough...it meant we had that stuff done before we shipped...We felt it was a win/win...We could have left it off and said "Hey, here's another disc."

Or you could have just stuck it on the disc at no extra cost to your customers. If you finished earlier, it means you spent less time, and presumably less money, on the development of this content than you budgeted for. Plus, you do understand that DLC stands for "DOWNLOADABLE content"?

"We're not saying that everything on the disc is the product".

Then how about you clearly advertise that before release so people are informed about what their purchase entitles them to.

Full good quality or much anticipated game costs maybe $100. Few of those game store chains even get a little room in there to entice you into buying it from them as well.

I have a thin budget so **** less this helps me decide which games I buy and which ones I don't.

Gears 3 = no buy. Whew, that was easy. For all the limited time and money a person has, there are virtually infinite good games around, new and old. I'm not missing anything.
