E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Obsidian Wants To Make New Star Wars RPG

Posted on Friday, February 8 @ 10:30:14 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Obsidian, the team behind Knights of the Old Republic IIFallout: New Vegas, and the upcoming South Park: The Stick of Truth, apparently really wants to make another role-playing game set in the Star Wars universe.

Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart told RockPaperShotgun that they're currently speaking with LucasArts in the hopes of getting the chance to make another Star Wars game, but one that does not take place during the Old Republic timeframe.

Instead, the team wants to make a game that is set some time between Episode III and Episode IV, when the Jedi are being wiped from the galaxy. Apparently Chris Avellone, a Star Wars comic writer and the man behind KOTOR II's narrative, has "[come] up with a really cool story."

Would you like to see another RPG from Obsidian set in this iconic universe? If so, what do you think of the proposed setting? Be sure to provide your two cents in the comments below.

Sure I would like to see it. LucasArts would have to behave like professionals, however, which I doubt they are actually capable of now. They've killed at least one studio, run professionals out of the industry and are content to mistreat developers to save a buck.

I just lost a lot of respect for Obsidian's personnel. No right minded individual would return to such a context having found better treatment elsewhere. They're the abused wife whose bruises from the last beating haven't even healed yet and, after finding out about how the husband beats his new girlfriend, exclaims 'but he's such a nice man!' This kind of crap won't stop until the victims take responsibility for their victimhood and make it stop.

But the Star Wars universe is like an abusive husband that throws great parties and is phenomenal in bed. When you find something you really want to make, you fool yourself into thinking things could be different. But didn't Disney get the rights to LucasArts when they purchased LucasFilm? I haven't been following all that much, but there's a chance of things actually being different.

That's certainly possible and I hadn't considered that. If that is the case then consider my point retracted.

Even if they did acquire LucasArts, I doubt they would make big personnel shifts in the upper levels, meaning Obsidian would be returning to the wrath of the Followers of George.

Disney does own LucasArts IP's now. The huge difference being, now LucasArts is a subsidiary of a publicly traded company, where the interests of shareholders comes before the whims or opinions of a single owner. Same model EA operates under. I would say that increases the chances the game gets the green light, but not sure about how that will affect quality yet. Let me just shake up my magic 8 ball.......hmm...ask again later.

Despite it's rushed release and numerous flaws, KOTOR 2 is still one of my favorite games of all time. Great story, and some of the best-written dialogue in any RPG I've ever seen. The unique and well-executed relationship between the player and the main antagonist is in itself a reason to experience the game.

So yea, if that dude came up with some more Star Wars stuff, I'd like to see it.

While I enjoyed the characters, I thought KOTOR 2's story was overly complicated, and was too dark. It didn't feel like Star Wars. And Kreia is obviously the villain from the moment you meet her.

The best part is where she lies. Constantly. You absolutely cannot trust a single word she says without independent verification, and something north of 90% of what she says cannot be independently verified. All you have are hints, guesses and hunches.

The game is 8 years old. This is bordering on 'it was his sled' territory. Second, as Cheesegod notes, it's obvious she can't be trusted before the prologue is even over. The first obvious clue is that she is far more aware of her situation than she has any right to be and the second is that she knows the bad guy hunting you and he knows her and they obviously have a lot of history. It isn't a straight line from that to 'she's the villain of the story' (best part: even when it's over, one can seriously argue otherwise) but it's pretty damn close. The question through acts one and two is not if she'll turn on you bet when, how and why. She already starts doing it before you're even fully free to explore the galaxy.

The fact that you know the entire time is what makes the dynamic so interesting. It didn't try to have a big "twist" like the first KOTOR and god knows how many other game stories. I'm pretty sure if you progress down her dialogue tree far enough, she essentially tells you she's the third Sith Lord. But the inevitability of the betrayal and your proximity to the character throughout the entire game allows you to dig much deeper into her personality and motivations.

I do agree the game is very dark in tone. It still felt like Star Wars to me personally, but I can see how someone would think otherwise.

As long as they give the game a real ending and not like KOTORII.

They did give it a real ending but there's a whole funny story with someone from LucasArts telling them they had more time than they did. Result: Large sections of the game had to be gutted to make it out the door in time, including about two-thirds of the ending. All because of a miscommunication. At least, that's the story Feargus Urquhart tells people. Knowing LucasArts threats to shoot puppies were probably involved. The really sick part is that they were so damn close.
