LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

I wasn't allowed to talk about the new Infinity Ward game last week when I met with Activision, and I don't have much to say now that Xbox One spilled the beans.

Ouya Dev Kits Ship Today, Unboxing Video Surfaces

Posted on Friday, December 28 @ 09:19:50 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

Ouuuuuuyaaaaa!

Boxer8 has begun to ship Ouya dev kits to a variety of developers today. Instead of just leaving it at that, the company decided to record an unboxing video to show what developers are receiving as well as give future customers an idea of what to expect at retail in a few months.

The Ouya is 7.5cm cubed, and now includes a micro USB port for quick file sharing via PC. While the outer shell of both the console and controllers are translucent in the dev kit, they will both have a silver and black finish at retail.

See the unboxing below:

The Ouya will debut in March for pre-orders, and will be made available to non pre-orders in April.

I used to defend this thing, but I've kinda switched sides. Does it mean I'm a jerk if I'm kinda excited to watch this whole thing fail? I mean, it plays cellphone games... on a tv.

No, you are not a jerk. Not only does it play cellphone games, but it basically just is a smartphone with controller support.

It means you are realistic and forward-thinking.

#1 The big corporations (Nintendo, Sony and Xbox) already have a stranglehold on gaming and they aren't going to let ANYTHING get in to challenege them.

#2 After On-Live, you'd think people would know better.

#3 You need to sell at least 3 million units to be competitive. That's not gonna happen since no one is gonna take a chance on it besides "early adopters" who always end up getting screwed.

I bet you I could do better with a dedicated device that had a 1 Terabyte memory a remote control and an HDMI, VGA and Coaxial out port which did nothing more than run porno.

A dedicated device for storing and viewing of HD porno would likely be a smash hit, lol.

I think it should say "Ouya" every time you turn it on using the same voice from the Genesis startup screen.

Devkits, and third party support, means this thing really does have a launch coming. That's more than we can say for the PS4.

I doubt it will even have much third party support. It's a console where piracy is even easier than it is on PC. That's an accomplishment. Like it almost seems like they would have had to make that their missions statement to come up with an idea this bad.

Maybe not, but that was phrased more as an indictment of Sony than a praise for the creators of this particular eh...parlor trick.

I don't want it to fail, but I don't care if it succeeds either.

It sounds like a lame idea to me, but so does Skylanders so what the fvck do I know?

I think it's a tight idea. Boss lady over there is introducing variety to the gaming world. Consumers have access to a cheap gaming device with the free will to mess around with it, as well as drive healthy competition in an industry that I think could benefit from lower prices and versatile, sustainable views on gaming and the future of the industry. Why y'all hating on it so much ?

Because it's not a new idea, it's a smartphone that you can't call people on.

my dude,, smartphones don't retail at this price - this is product diversification. From a consumer's standpoint, I couldn't be more pleased, and I can't see why you aren't. Games shouldn't cost 55/60 bucks, I'm sorry, right now it's just too expensive an industry. I'm a student who has to juggle a part time job, college, a girlfriend, basketball, gym, parties, heavy drinking, herb-sessions on hoops nights and exams and tuition- I just can't see the downside to to offering a cheaper product that is both innovative in it's pricing policy as well as it's hacking policy.
I'm not (as) tech-savvy as some of you on here, but if this lil guy could theoretically push the same gameplay and visuals of say, nba 2k12, I would be on this quicker than a dollar spins. It doesn't have to even necessarily be so beastly spec-wise, just have to be a solid all-round console. It's only the beginning mate,,
