PlayStation 3 Reportedly Surpasses Xbox 360 In Units Shipped Worldwide

Thanks to a year head start and a lower price of entry, Microsoft's Xbox 360 had quite a significant lead over the PlayStation 3 when Sony's system first launched back in '06. Since that time, the Blu-ray-powered machine has been playing catchup, and now some six years later, it has managed to surpass Microsoft's gaming box.

According to a forecast document from the International Data Corporation (and made into plain English by GI International), the PlayStation 3 has officially outpaced the Xbox 360 is units shipped worldwide. As of December 2012, “Sony’s PS3 managed to surpass the number of Xbox 360s shipped worldwide (about 77 million vs. 76 million), despite the PS3 launching a year later.”

While units shipped isn't a direct correlation to actual sales, one would assume that neither Microsoft nor Sony would ship consoles out in a number that grossly exceeds demand.

The forecast also went on to discuss the future of Nintendo's latest console, predicting that “Nintendo will still ‘find an audience’ with Wii U, reaching global shipments of 50 million by year-end 2016.”

    I remember calling this back when the PS3 "had no games". Everyone thought I was crazy.

    Oh yeah i called it too, from the first time i touched that dualshock 3 controller in Wal-mart and nearly pissed myself seeing the pores on the face of fighter in the virtual fighter demo, i knew that it would win... took it long enough though...

    I wonder if anyone has ever factored in that most people have had to buy several Xbox consoles due to RRoD. If they did, I'm sure the PS3 sales would look even more impressive in comparison.

    i actually dont know anyone that has only owned 1 Xbox hell most people i know have had 3 or more then you also have people that buy the limited versions(Halo, CoD ect) which im sure really added to the sales

    I had an RRoD and a YLoD. I traded my PS3 for a refurb. Never cared to replace the 360...

    The 500GB model is $300. Sounds pretty good to me.

    I could care less about who gets second place this Gen. With numbers this close its not going to matter at all. The Wii already won this gen anyway which is insult enough.

    Who cares in any gen? I spend too much time playing video games to care if the consoles or games I play are "beating" their competition
