Portal 2's Critical Acclaim Getting Screamed Over By Metacritic Users

Posted on Tuesday, April 19 @ 13:20:02 Eastern by

Are we back to this again? There are a lot of places you don't go on the internet to read user comments. Youtube, Gametrailers... Now, Metacritic.

Despite the near universal acclaim from critics about Portal 2, Metacritic's user reviews are being abused to splatter a nice, red yellow, ugly "6.2" next to the aggregated, green, shiny "95." Take a look for yourself. As of writing, some fans have lept to Valve's defense, but Metacritic's user reviews are now about as dumb and pointless as screaming into your shoe about your hat. Here are a few choice selections from the bottom of the barrel:

--Valve Sucks.

--4 hours. $50 Optional silly hats, SO RANDUM GESTURES XD and skins that were FREE IN HALF-LIFE 1 games. The gameplay is exactly the same as the previous game. Yes, I mad.

--The co-op robots clearly rip off of Mario and Luigi. When will PC gamers stop ripping off of the purity of console games? Since this game isn't coming out for Wii there's no way I'm playing it.

I love the last writer's comments. Not only did this individual give the game a ZERO, but they haven't played it and their blatant Nintendo fanboyism will prevent them from ever trying the game. "The purity of console games." Who gave these people their license to access the internet?

Let's face it, the reason for all this stupidity is that Game Revolution's review isn't live yet! Right?

Fuck it, who reads reviews of Valve games anyways....

I learned not to take reviews from fans seriously. Usually, they just like to hear themselves talk.

that's why i only trust GR reviews. otherwise i would have totally skipped out on the Halo franchise because, "it's just a rip off of goldeneye but 10 years too late."

It depends on the fan the review is coming from. It's pretty easy to tell by their writing style if they have their head on straight and are older than 14.

Even if someone can write coherently, they can still have terrible writing skills when it comes to making a review.

I think it's because of sad old 4chan's video game board. From what I understand, pretty frequently everyone on there gathers and has a big cry-fest about the "horrible state of modern gaming" and then goes and sh!ts on something because they're all twelve years old and don't know how to deal with their emotions.

If a review for ANYTHING (movie, game, music, etc.) looks as though it was probably written via Twitter, I tend to consider said opinion completely invalid.

I think user reviews are an important source of information nowadays. Even more when you consider that many big name review sites are misleading in their reviews.
Perfect example would be when Empire: Total War came out. Many sites (this one included) made it sound like it was one of the best games of all time. Funny how that game was broken at release (release day patch needed just to run the game) and it was plagued with problems for over half a year. I made this account just to write my own crappy review to counter the one on here as well as gripe about it on metacritic. It still scored over 90 with all the "professional" critics. They don't penalize the games enough for stuff like that which they should.

Just wanted to add: A person who scores the game a 0 and just says "valve sucks" obviously should be ignored. A person who scores it a 0 and has valid complaints might be a passionate fan who was disappointed. It don't make their complaint less valid but no game should be scored a 0. People do it just to bring down the overall score.
On the other end, no game should be a 10 either. If you look at any early reviews of any big name games coming out, early press always gives it a 100 (on the other scale) This is to give the game an early jump and inflate the score. Those people are just as guilty as gaming the system as the ones giving out the 0's.

@C_nate: That's my biggest problem with Metacritic. It's a system, it's gamed on a regular basis. No one knows the formula, and sites like GR which don't run a numerical score get their grade twisted to fit into whatever hole Metacritic requires.
