PS4 Won't Support 4K Games, 3D Taking A Backseat

Posted on Thursday, February 21 @ 15:55:32 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Despite the fact that Sony had been pushing 3D with the PlayStation 3 quite a bit over the past several years, it apparently won't be a main focus for the company with the PS4.

"It's not a focus. But it does do it better," Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida explained. "The basic capability is higher so more games will run at 1080p at 60 frames so it's an easier and better experience when you watch on 3D TV."

With regard to why it's not a major part of Sony's strategy going forward, Yoshida went on to add, "3D was a big thing a couple of years ago — we made it a big thing because it was lead by the consumer electronics side of Sony and we liked what we could do on PS3 using 3D stereoscopic,. But now the consumer electronics side of Sony, or all of the companies have shifted focus from 3D TV to something else, so if they're not talking about it, why would we?"

With regard to 4K support, "the PS4 supports 4K output, but only for photos and videos — not games," Mr. Yoshida also said. "PS4 games do not work on 4K."

So there you have it. No 4K games and a reduced focus on 3D. Is this a good move by Sony, or are you disappointed by the news? Let us know in the comments below.

Very happy, don't really care about 3D. It's nice on the 3DS but I don't really have it on all the time.

The only think I liked about 3d on the PC was it gave us 120hz back(Something we had back in the crt days) So now I can see all the way up to 120fps. Most consoles dont provide more than 30fps other than on select few games like COD.

You can have the 3d part back.

4K games would look like ****. I doubt most high-end PCs can run games at 60 FPS at 4K resolution without a losing some performance and visual quality. It would be 3x worse on PS3. I could see it working for 2D games...but yeah. Rendering and displaying are two different things.

Even if the system supported it (4k) there's no chance games would run at it (remember how long it took for ps3 to predominantly run 1080p).

4K for videos is all that matters really. So it's awesome it will support 4K video playback. If you know, you buy a 4K projector or TV and notice a difference on less than 80 inches...
