PSN Day 1 Digital Program Announced, Coincide With Retail Releases [Update]

Posted on Tuesday, September 25 @ 09:49:37 Eastern by

Sony Computer Entertainment of America announced this morning a new intiative to bring digital download versions of this holiday season's biggest and best games to the PlayStation Network the very same day as retail release.

The move is similar to what they're already doing for the PlayStation Vita. However, in addition to day one digital releases, some of the titles will be available for pre-order and at a discount for PlayStation Plus members opting to go for these PSN digital versions of the following titles:
  • Resident Evil 6 (Available for download on October 2 - $59.99)
  • NBA 2K13 (Available for download on October 2 - $59.99/$53.99 for PLUS members, with pre-order)*
  • Dishonored (Available for download on October 9 - $59.99/$53.99 for PLUS members, with pre-order)*
  • DOOM 3: BFG Edition (Available for download on October 16 - $39.99/$35.99 for PLUS members, with pre-order)*
  • 007: Legends (Available for download on October 16 - $59.99)+
  • Medal Of Honor: Warfighter (Available for download on October 23 - $59.99)
  • Need For Speed: Most Wanted (Available for download on October 30 - $59.99/$53.99 for PLUS members, with pre-order)*
  • Assassin’s Creed III (Available for download on October 30 - $59.99)*
Let's hope Sony keeps up this trend into 2013 to help make the PlayStation Network a more viable option when considering where you will make your purchase.

[Update] Some titles will also have midnight releases. Sony isn't say which games will have midnight launches at this time. We'll update when that info is available.

Tell GR: Is this something you'll take advantage of? And what can Sony do to make this option even more appealing?

Has there been any word on if Assassin's Creed 3 Liberation for the Vita is getting a digital release off the bat? I know most have for the Vita, wasn't sure if this one was different for some reason.

They haven't said explicitly, but because ACIII on PS3 is, and most Vita games are digital, I'd say that it's extremely likely, almost guaranteed that it'll be available digitally on day one. Ubisoft likes digital releases. The entire Vita launch line-up from Ubi was digital. I'll let you know if I hear anything, though.

    So, no pre-loading?

Call me old, but I go with physical copies of games whenever I can, even the likes of Guild Wars 2 or games on Steam. Installing from a CD is still faster, and my key is in multiple places. I'm still happy to get games that are only digital though. I'll echo De-Ting, and say that without pre-loading midnight release is useless.

I agree. I don't generally buy retail games digitally. I also usually only shop steam when they have a super sale, because I don't like the idea of Valve being able to turn off my account and not let me play the games I "bought".

I will also buy digital only games on PSN / Live, but I have an issue with the eshop. Since there is no account to link your purchases to, where is the value in buying a game like New Super Mario Bros. 2 digitally? If I am right if your 3DS dies currently, don't you lose all of your content?
