LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

PSN Disaster Making Waves At Retailers

Posted on Thursday, May 12 @ 07:08:31 Eastern by

It's been over three weeks since the PlayStation Network first went down. Users are understandably frustrated as they can't enjoy the full advertised features of their console, nor their games.

It's beginning to have a negative effect at retail; PlayStation 3 consoles are being traded in, and multiple console owners are swapping PS3 pre-orders to the Xbox 360 version instead. One source, while speaking to Edge under strict anonymity shed some light on the situation at retail:

...from the second week (of PSN down time) onwards we have seen an increase of over 200 per cent on PS3 consoles being traded in, split almost 50/50 between those trading for cash and those taking a 360 instead.

Sony is losing a significant amount of users to the Xbox 360 due to the PlayStation Network being down. Games that are built around an online multiplayer model like Call of Duty: Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2 are the biggest driving factor of users making the switch. This "hardcore online shooter crowd" are the most affected by this outage:

...they are bringing in PS3s together with all their games and they don’t want money, they want an Xbox 360. In every case it is because of Black Ops and or Modern Warfare 2.

Any game that relies too heavily on online functionality is essentially DOA. Bethesda's recently released Brink is a prime example:

People are cancelling their order of Brink for PS3. People that have an Xbox 360 have switched their pre-orders – others are just cancelling entirely.

This is only the beginning in terms of the ramifications Sony is going to face due to this security breach. Tell us, has the outage caused you to make any trade-ins or change your game purchasing behavior?

Idk ...I hate to say it but sony really let me down...just like my first 2 xboxs I boughtlet me down....the only reason I haven't switched is because of all the years of not enjoying my 360 and rrods dvd dirive failure...fable games suck since original xbox and halo is just gay unless on pc...my ps3 was everything to me I found a website I could download music directly to my ps3 watched every season of weeds on ps3 youtube....download about a 1000 songs to it plus transferred them to my blackberry in minutes...this is what my ps3 did for me and I didn't even mod it ....

And this is why games should not be so online heavy. When stuff like this happens, you got a very expensive paperweight. I don't have a PS3 myself, but if I did and was caught in this situation, I'd have my Wii to fall back on.

I'm blessed with owning both a PS3 and a 360. I love the exclusives too much to even think about trading in my ps3, not to mention its my only bluray player. Wildmario is on the nose with saying games shouldnt be online heavy. They should have an online mode, sure, but not dependent on the online for their deciding selling factor unless they are on the pc.

I want to see the actual numbers on how many people have traded in/sold PS3s since the PSN went down. I highly doubt it's a significant number. I'm glad hardcore people are switching systems though, they're no fun to play with since they'll yell at you for having the audacity to get shot because you weren't using the optimum equipment/perk loadout. I love videogames and I love playing online but if you can't live without a game for a month or so then you should check your priorities and maybe kill yourself, or just go outside. I've lost 15 pounds since the PSN was hacked.

People seem to forget that PS3 multiplayer is free. I can wait.

What does the PS3 having free online have to do with anything? I don't care if it was free or 20 bucks a month. If something goes down for this long and I can't play games online, the games that I paid for, I'd be pissed too.

I have both 360 and PS3, but the outage hasn't affected me at all. Live has always been superior to PSN, so any game that I want to play online, I get for the 360. The only games I really buy for PS3 are the exclusives (which isn't many). I've mostly been using my PS3 lately to stream downloaded videos from my PC to my TV, and for the occasional BluRay.

I actually just bought a ps3 because i got a coupon for $100 off at gamestop. I figured I'd get it for the exclusives and single player games like Heavy Rain which is a game I've been wanting to play for a while. However that game freezes on me at a certain point (two different game discs have been used) and so I was told it might be due to not being able to get a small update. But, I can wait and Portal 2 is keeping me busy so far.
