PSP Sales Nearly Match Wii-U, PlayStation All-Stars Flops in Japan

Posted on Wednesday, February 6 @ 06:17:46 Eastern by Heath_Hindman

How many copies of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale do you think Sony intended to sell in Japan during its debut week? Two-hundred thousand? One-hundred thousand? Or at least half that, 50k? Whatever the goal was, I assure you it was much, much higher than 12,000 units. Sadly for the company, that's all that the PS3 version of its multiplayer brawler could manage. The Vita version failed to chart, meaning whatever it sold fell below 6,100. Below lies Media Create's best-seller list, spanning January 28 to February 3.
1. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf - 65,740
2. [3DS] Fantasy Life - 20,606
3. [PS3] DmC: Devil May Cry - 15,157
4. [3DS] New Super Mario Bros. 2 - 12,546
5. [PS3] PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale  - 11,758
6. [3DS] Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - 11,330
7. [PS3] Accel World: Kasoku no Chouten - 10,551
8. [PSV] Demon Gaze - 10,424
9. [WII] Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Super Deluxe Edition - 10,125
10. [PSP] Accel World: Kasoku no Chouten - 8,633
11. [3DS] Inazuma Eleven Go 2: Chrono Stone - 7,754
12. [PS3] Kamisama to Unmei Kakumei no Paradox - 7,606
13. [3DS] Paper Mario: Sticker Star - 7,537
14. [PS3] Hitman: Absolution - 7,490
15. [3DS] Taiko no Tatsujin: Chibi Dragon to Fushigi na Orb - 7,450
16. [PSP] Digimon Adventure - 7,397
17. [3DS] Tousouchuu: Shijou Saikyou no Hunter-Tachi Kara Nigekire! - 7,288
18. [PSP] Renai 0 Kilometer Portable - 6,884
19. [WIU] New Super Mario Bros. U - 6,338
20. [PS3] Call of Duty: Black Ops II - Dubbed Edition - 6,166

Hardware numbers show that either the PSP has a ton of selling power, or the Wii-U is underperforming right now. The truth, as with anything, probably lies in some combination of the two. Here's the full hardware chart.
3DS - 77,682
PS3 - 18,106
Wii-U - 12,959
PSP - 12,191
PSV - 9,596
Wii - 1,904
360 - 870
Next week, expect continued high-positioning by Animal Crossing, but number one will almost certainly be the Dragon Quest VII remake for 3DS. It will stab everything in the eye.

Considering the price of new games and the economic climate we currently live in, its not surprising that game sales are down. Not to mention that a lot of people will still be dealing with paying for Christmas

Actually, paying for Christmas isn't that big of a deal in Japan, since you only really give gifts to your immediate family. That, and having a credit card is virtually unheard of here. There are plenty of places that accept them, but for every one that does, you'll find a furniture store, a restaurant, and a travel agency that don't. My wife and I bought plane tickets to the states from a travel place one year...that doesn't accept credit cards. They're open, they're downtown, and they do great business, all from people not using credit cards. Yes, this means we went in there with $4,000 in cash to pay for our tickets. Places that sell everything from groceries to $500 desks don't take credit; it's for the most part a cash-based society. You can be sure that paying for Christmas, for the most part, was all done by December 24th in Japan ^_^

Really? I didn't know that and it's very interesting to me. I thought everyone over there payed with cards or extra hightech phones that you can just scan to pay with.

There are a lot of pay methods that deduct directly from your bank account (debit) and plenty of debit cards, but yeah, using credit isn't very common. My wife just joined a gym the other day, and the one and only method of payment they accept? Direct withdrawal from your bank account. Same story with the three other gyms she checked out. The karate dojo down the street? Same deal. Here, you usually have the money for material goods before you buy them. It's bizarre.

And Re: Christmas, I should add that the amount of presents is drastically below what an American family tends to get. Any North American that shows Christmas Day pictures to families out here will be met with lots of "Heeeeeey?" reactions at how much stuff is being opened.

This was culture shock to me as well when my father-in-law explained it to me after moving there.

I would think such an advanced society would be cashless, and that is correct. But unlike most Americans, they are RESPONSIBLY cashless, and live within their means.

Ah so it's mostly just credit that is missing. I don't use credit either but just about everything I buy is through my debit card.

I'm looking forward to both Animal Crossing and Monster Hunter from that list. Good to see they're doing great in Japan. Too bad we have to wait so long to get them here.

Holy sh** Animal Crossing domination. Guess I know what Japanese people are playing.
