Raiden Announcement For PlayStation All-Stars Evokes Developer Disappointment

Posted on Friday, September 14 @ 12:45:03 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

Raiden might seem like a natural fit for PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale, but that doesn't mean Kojima Productions and Platinum Games have to be happy about it.

Yuji Korekado of Kojima Productions shared during a video interview with GameTrailers that he's disappointed that Raiden's induction into PSABR was leaked before the planned announcement. He said:

You know we’re working with Santa Monica Studios to create Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale and Raiden is in there but there are some things we’re quite not satisfied with. We are looking forward to working with Santa Monica and creating a really cool game with them and having a big announcement here at PAX. Unfortunately, there were a couple leaks leading up to the show and so we were a little dismayed at that unfortunately.

A lot of gamers were expecting the announcement well before it was leaked, so it isn't that big of a deal. However, it's understandable to be disappointed when you're a developer at a convention and one of your announcements is broken before you get to make it. Ouch.

Platinum Games' Atsushi Inabu's thoughts are a different story. He had very little to say but it definitely wasn't positive. He said the following to GameTrailers:

...there are a few things we are not too thrilled about with Battle Royale as well but the reasons are different. So we hold that for later.

Whether it's the game, Raiden's character model, or his abilities is unknown. However, given that they announced Bayonetta 2 as a Wii U exclusive earlier in the week, their reasoning is certainly not fan-related.

Should of gone with the Grey Fox cyborg ninja. Then he could say things like "Hurt me! Hurt me more!" whenever he gets hit and freak everyone out. Or better yet, Psycho Mantis, where the only way to win against him is to switch controllers with the other person and play as Psycho Mantis.

There are definitely better MGS characters to choose from for inclusion in PSASBR. Feels like a decision was made on what was marketable, as opposed to who fans would really like to play as.

I like how this makes Raiden a "playstation all star". Why not include Gordon Freeman since he happened to be in a game that happened to be on a playstation console... Who named this game deserves a punch in the dick (or vagina).

I think this game would be a lot better if it was multiplat, co-developed with Microsoft and Nintendo, and they just admitted they're using characters that have nothing to do with "playstation". It worked with Nintendo since they're such a prolific developer and you can only find their games on their systems, whereas Sony hardly has any games they've developed themselves. That and they don't have one unified dev studio brand, meaning all the games developed by companies they do own have no cohesion. You get Parappa the Rapper fighting against Sweet Tooth or Kratos.

Exactly. If you want to include Raiden or other multi plat characters fine, but don't call them "playstation all stars", because they're not

Ultimately I think we'll see a 60-40 split of PS-aligned characters and third-party toss-ins. The real problem is that Sony will end up diluting their truly exclusive characters in favor of an engorged roster. Either way they'll be eviscerated by fans.

They are literally just tossing in any character with a fanbase who at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if Nitrous Oxide is playable.

My assumption is that Platinum keeps secrets and IPs very close to their chest (look at the collective departure the talent made from Capcom over the way their IPs are handled). Here Sony blew a major character reveal, and on a character that Platinum needs to pay the bills this year. It hurts their bottom line.

I'd only be in favor of games like this if the makers of MORTAL KOMBAT 9 were behind it. I hate those stupid "Smash Bros" and "Street Fighter" style games for these dumb ass, underachieving A.D.H.D school kids. I want the fighting to be realistic, brutal and I demand that there be finishing moves were you completely MURDER the opponent.

    Otherwise - what's the point?
