Report Indicates Black Ops 2 Reveal Has Boosted Call of Duty Hype 400%

Posted on Thursday, May 3 @ 11:10:23 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Black Ops 2
is taking the world by storm. Following its Tuesday night reveal, the game has gone on to triple its predecessor's day one sales on Amazon. And it doesn't stop there, as research firm Neilsen Media has reported that since the launch trailer hit the web, the Call of Duty franchise has seen a 400% jump in awareness.

This ridiculous spike in buzz for the series can be attributed to all of the chatter that has been going on via social media sites as well as various forums and blogs. Back on Monday, a total of 4,911 messages were amassed from forums regarding the game, but now, following the official unveiling, that number has jumped up to 21,454.

If you've seen the mind-blowing trailer, the huge jump in Black Ops 2 hype shouldn't come as all that much of a surprise. And as you might expect, the platform most discussed when referencing the game was the Xbox 360.

According to Neilsen analyst Mickey Campione, “Historically, buzz has been at its highest around launch time for Call of Duty, generating up to 69,942 messages on a single day. As far as pre-launch buzz goes, today’s buzz total of 21,454 is second highest, only to May 31, 2011′s 21,728 messages. The buzz on [that day] came after Activision announced their Call of Duty: Elite online community."

It looks like we'll just have to wait until the game's November release to find out if Black Ops 2 can manage to live up to the snowballing level of buzz.

I couldn't be less interested in paying $60 for a skin change on a 5 year old game.

I only purchased blops through peer pressure as most of my gaming friends were playing it, regretted it instantly, skipped MW3, and this one I'll not only skip, but melt any copy I find. You want to know why new games aren't coming out anymore? Because somehow 13 year olds have been convinced this is the greatest thing ever, and convince there parents to buy it year after year.

I can't even take reviews of the game seriously anymore. I've disliked games that have gotten good grades, but I can at least see where the grade is stemming from in the reviews, with the COD series, there is zero innovation, zero new content worth mentioning, a campaign that is criminally short, an old engine, an outdated multiplayer with perhaps the shittiest spawning system, and the only new updates are game-balance destroying killstreaks, killstreaks everywhere, every god damn 5 seconds

"OMG drones and jets and mechs! best game evar, so inventive!!1!"

I think that maybe, just maybe this one will turn the franchise around. Im no CoD fanboy, i think the attitude of 'if it aint broke don't fix it' that the franchise has shown over the last few years is a smack in the face to all of the loyal fans that keep buying games just because the say Call of Duty on the front. And i think that the developers may have started to take note of all the negativity that has been hurled at them over the last few years, adding to that the success of BF3 and the frostbite 2 engine (which should make the upcoming Medal of Honor game something to look forward to) Treyarch may have realised the need to up their game this time.

I liked MW and MW2. I bought Black Ops and only really played zombies after I beat the campaign. The multiplayer just wasn't fun somehow. Because of Black Ops I skipped MW3 and don't regret it.
