Resident Evil To Remain Action-Focused, Dreams Of Call of Duty

Posted on Friday, January 20 @ 07:37:56 Eastern by

Yesterday's big news came from Capcom's Resident Evil 6 reveal. Those sons of bitches made a segment in our podcast moot by announcing the game before we could get the podcast published. In the upcoming episode of GameRevolution Radio, due to publish later today, Nick, Daniel and I talked about the series getting back to the "survival horror" roots rather than sticking with the steroid-filled action horror prevelant throughout Resident Evil 5. After we saw the new trailer, it was clear that survival horror is dead to Resident Evil, and here's why.

While speaking to MCV Magazine, Capcom UK's head of marketing, Dave Turner, explained the series' action focus:
We've seen the popularity of Resident Evil increase massively as the series became more action-oriented - Resident Evil 5 is the biggest seller in the series. So, it makes sense for us to follow this action area more fully.
He further added, referring to the upcoming Operation Raccoon City:
The dream would be that the millions of Call of Duty fans that are enjoying these fast-paced online games are attracted to this Resident Evil.
There you have it, folks. Fucking Call of Duty. Every goddamn publisher wants a piece of Call of Duty's billion-dollar pie. Soon, all that will be on the market is Call of Duty clones.

Vote below: Would you rather have a survival horror Resident Evil, or do you agree that the more it's like Call of Duty, the better?

If you feel strongly about this subject, don't miss today's episode of GameRevolution Radio. That, and look out for more Resident Evil coverage from Nick Tan, who attended Capcom's Fright Night in San Franciso last night.

I rather Resident Evil return to its root. It isn't just the survival horror aspect that drew me in the first time, but the puzzles were a ton of fun to figure out.

Back to the Resident Evil that I could only play in day time with an audience. This action **** makes it too easy. Seriously I beat RE5 in one sitting and not once was I too scared to continue. I've been more afraid playing Fallout 3 then I ever was while running and gunning through RE5

Back to the roots, the kind you burned in the basement of the mansion.

The first game I ever had for the PSX was RE2, the Dual-Shock version. That was an experience, that lasted for months. Even when you knew what was around the next corner, it still had a way of getting to you. The first 3 incarnations of the series were some of the best gaming experiences I ever had. I feel sorry for the poor kids who received RE4 or RE5 as their first games on a system. Cool games, but they are definitely not what the Resident Evil series was about.

Well that's to be expected. It works the same way in music: Everyone wanted to be Madonna, then the Spice Girls, then Britney, then Jonas Brothers, then Justin Biever.

And it's great they admit it because it helps me decide which games I should play and which I shouldn't.

Revelations seems to be a throw back to a survival horror game. Played the demo last night and it was great. It's not exactly the same as the original but I think it's changed for the better. It was only like a 10 min demo though so maybe it'll be nothing like it seems.

I remember the lingering tension and feeling of helplessness from the first game. I remember feeling brave but overwhelmed as all the horrors of an infected city came down on me from the second game. I remember the ever-present pressure of a focused killing machine endlessly chasing me during the third game. What do I remember from the fourth and fifth games? Pretty hair and rock-punching.
We shouldn't feel certain of success in these games.

I feel that RE is so far from survival horror that it's in the realm of other IPs. If I'm to take take a survival horror from RE seriously, it'd need to be from another developer.

Definitely a survival horror RE. RE4 was awesome too, so that sort of game would be okay too. But if it's gonna be like f*cking COD, they can shove it up their ass. Next thing you know, it'll be an FPS. You know, f*ck Capcom! First they kill Megaman and now they are crapping all over RE.

Of course RE5 is the best selling game in the series. Video games weren't as popular during RE1-3 and no one ****ing bought a gamecube. Everyone has a 360, and if they don't they have a PS3. It has nothing to do with the game being any better.

RE5 was the first game in the series I played and then RE4 and I loved them both. I'm not a survival horror fan so if they continue in the same vein I am fine with that. Although I hope they are just trying to attract the COD audience and not trying to attract them with COD-like features

Resident Evil 2 was the first game I spent my own money on. I still have that jewel case occupying a place of honor on my game shelf. Unfortunately there hasn't been a new RE game since Nemesis. As much as I loved this series, I think it's time we put the 9mm parabellum through the brain pan. I've owned every RE since 2, and I think the GameCube REmake should be the benchmark against which all HD upgrades should be measured, but the whole time I played 5 I couldn't shake the feeling I was spending time with a pod person: a stranger with a loved one's face. There was Resident Evil on the box, and yeah, the guy on screen was calling himself Chris Redfield, but there wasn't anything left of the game I loved. Not advocating "Tank controls or bust!!!" but holy crap, dial it down a notch. RE should be more WWZ or Walking Dead than, well, "Resident Evil: The Movie Where Milla Jo is hot and pow bam pew pew, whoa! ROUNDHOUSE KICK A TYRANNOSAUR!!!"

I would love to see a Resident Evil with RE5's control scheme (or maybe even something a little smoother) and the oppressive atmosphere and slower pacing of RE2. Just because much of the older games atmosphere came from clunkiness doesn't mean that it's impossible to reconcile the two.

Oh definitely. I didnt mean to imply that. I also didn't mean to imply I didn't have fun in RE5. Everytime I had to use melee I wanted to shout "REDFIELD PAWNCH!" like Captain Falcon. I have no problem with a game like RE5 existing, I'm just buggered if I know why it feels it has to murder a dear friend of mine (RE series) and wear its skin for me to like it. I'm arguing more for a, "If it ain't got the atmosphere, don't use the GD name, son." approach. Thy started an action RE game on the PS2 many moons ago, until the developers said "ummm, why do we need the RE name, again? It's really chafing our style." so they ditched the idea of trying to force Resident Evil into a new body. The game that resulted was Devil May Cry! You can create a badass new IP without having to slap a name on it that doesn't fit. And at the end of the day, you end up with 2 great franchises, instead of making one lose it's identity.

I have no problem with what Resident Evil 4 did. It introduced a much more intuitive control scheme and good gameplay for taking on large groups of infected. It wasn't scary (except for Mr. Setting Yourself on Fire in the Oven Is Totally A Good Idea), but it was certainly freaky in some moments (invisible Novistadors in the sewers, anyone?). It was 5 that really ruined it. It wasn't scary, it wasn't freaky even like 4 was. It was all just run, gun, and PUNCH A F*CKING BOULDER.

If they took RE4's style, added more exploration, cut the ammo/heal drops/finds in half (or two thirds), and made the game scarier, I think it'd be a good compromise. They can even keep some of the run-and-gun moments around for certain heated segments of the game to change things up once in a while.

Funny, I comented on the RE6 confirmation story posted some days ago that the plot resembled CoD: MW, and now Capcom pretty much confirms it. In all honestly, I enjoyed MW cheesy b-movie storyline, but I don't feel that it is necessary for RE to copy it, especially since Resident Evil already has a cheesy b-movie storyline of its own.

Resident Evil 4 was actually my favourite RE experience,

I played the first three on PSX and enjoyed them a lot, but the updated controls suit the game better - the viewing angle is narrow, so despite your ability to see in every direction you will never be able to see whats behind you, which I think psychologically has a greater effect than seeing a whole scene at once - those regenerating enemies that you had to zoom into IR scope view to shoot the creatures out of the insides of were terrifying when I first met them too! The more intense combat with ammo being more available helped keep things interesting in parts of the game that would have otherwise been un-interesting.
