Resident Evil To Return To Series' Roots, Reboot A Possibility

Posted on Thursday, January 31 @ 13:52:23 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Ever since Resident Evil 4, Capcom's survival horror franchise has become more and more action-focused. As a result, recent entries don't have the same charm of the originals, and most fans aren't too happy about it.

Fortunately, Capcom is well aware of its fan base, and plans to return to what made Resident Evil so special, hinting that a reboot may be in the works. In an interview with IGN, series producer Masachika Kawata explained:

I think that it’s important for us to have users’ needs in mind when making the games. At the same time I think a lot of what people want now is to have Chris and Jill in a game, or they want it to look like Resident Evil used to look like. That’s what makes the game work for them. We should be able to start from scratch and reboot it. It would still be Resident Evil. We wouldn’t lose the essential nature of what makes it a good game just by changing the characters.

Kawata went on to recognize that while games of this ilk may not sell quite as well as action-heavy shooters, it doesn't mean they don't deserve the funding. “Survival horror as a genre is never going to be on the same level, financially, as shooters and much more popular, mainstream games," he said. "At the same time, I think we need to have confidence to put money behind these projects, and it doesn’t mean we can’t focus on what we need to do as a survival horror game to meet fan’s needs."

What do you think this newfound sense of direction at Capcom? Would you like to see a reboot of the franchise? Let us know in the comments below.

But the same that have complained about the series sucking since Resident Evil 4 will be the same ones who complains when Capcom takes it back to its roots because its slow.

Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 are designed for casual gamers and multiplayer. I'll never forget how hard the first game was and how much easier the RE games have gotten since then. I'd like to see a survival horror game that isn't based on puzzles. Similar to Left 4 Dead, massive multiplayer online and more freedom. Picture a zombie infested world the size of Far Cry 3's with over 100 people either working together or killing each other to hoard items while simultaneously attempting to evade Zombies.

Only ONE LIFE and if you get killed you have to start a new character.

Hmm i dont really recall resident evil 1 and 2 as that hard. The reboot was pretty damn tough.

But good games none the less.

RE1 was HARD on Playstation. The Hunters could kill you in a single hit. Aiming was harder than on RE2. The puzzles weren't as obvious.

RE2 kept only the easy puzzles from RE1 and introduced a quick aiming toggle - aiming overall was smoother.

I recently replayed 1 and 2. One was harder for the reasons stated but was a shortter game. 2 was difficult due to game length.

I never had to much trouble with the hunters. only the first 2-3 encounters.

But gotta agree on the aiming. And you are absolutly right about the puzzles.

The Reboot was tough, but damn did I love it. I loved the challenge of having to decapitate or torch the zombies to finally get rid of them. I was really disappointed when I played Zero because it went back to the old style of shooting a zombie five times in the chest and they go down. The challenge wasn't there, and I think that was because of the game originally being a N64 game. It was a good game, but after being challenged every step of the way with Remake, I was disappointed with how "easy" Zero was for me.

I recall Keiji Inafune made Dead rising in response to the low zombie kill counts in recent resident evil games. For a long time, i played Resident evil because i thought i liked survivor horror. As i played frank west ripping zombies to pieces with a lawn mower however, the truth, came to me: I just like killing zombies more. So sorry, even if it goes back to its root, i'm growing tired of resident evil now.

Thank you Keiji Inafune for helping me find the true meaning to my life

The old Resident Evil games wasn't just about the survival horror aspects, but what also made them good was you trying to unlock the mysteries behind the events and learning what exactly went on. I remember being flabbergasted seeing that Wesker was a traitor for the first time.

Word-for-word my thoughts. The first five games (0, 1, 2, 3, and Code Veronica) were all heavily story driven. I use to get online and read backstories about characters, events, and places that either weren't directly discussed, or weren't discussed in-depth enough for me in the games because I loved the story so much.

I also had a "NO FUCKING WAY" moment when Wesker turned heel. One of gaming's best reveals and villains if you ask me.

    Also, Jill Sandwich.

So silly one liners and the idiot advice to split up in a zombie crisis?
Anyways, if it scares me, requires thought prevoking puzzles, and ammo rationing, without all these zombie things that endlessly transform into larger vesticules then I am all for it.
Also no quick time events, I always die.

This is exactly what I want, but I can't see them doing it properly. Whenever developers talk about returning to roots and giving players what they want, they never actually do it. RE6 was meant to be horror and action but that was a load of crap, and I can just imagine capcom making the same mistake again. Will they make another RE that's all about puzzle solving and horror like the classics like we want? No way in hell

So does this mean that they will just abandon the idea of doing a REmake of RE2 like they did with the first RE for the cube? I was really hoping that would become a reality..... I can still hope. i feel as though i may end up being a sad panda. As far as rebooting the series goes, I dont think that they need to go back to fixed corridors to make it scary. I think dead space 1 proved that the over the shoulder aspect could still be scary as hell. All they really needed to bring back was some puzzles and ammo conservation, and as wild mario said, part of the fun was finding all that stuff about the back story.

I think it's about time they make use of the RE 1.5 ideas for this supposed reboot. I wanna finally see a biker girl take on giant mutated apes in the city streets! >:0

I just discovered that RE2 is on the playstation network. Hey capcom, guess which RE I'm going to be playing! It's not 6!

And then the ****er numps outta the closet. Journals/Memos/Reports were done well on original RE's.
They will have to change the music, as the latest games all feature fast rock. Throw some violins and piano at me.

ABOUT TIME THEY PULL THEIR HEADS OUT OF THEIR ASSES!!!

its pretty bad when the best RE game since pt 4 in 05' is on a handheld system...

now, i really hope they dont do another reboot! there is no point, it was done on gamecube and was perfect IMO... they just need to make a fresh, scary game with elements of RE 1-4...

I know we tend to romanticize the past so let's be real here - RE 1,2,3 and Code Veronica were not masterpieces when it comes to story or screenwriting. It was never the story that made them fascinating. It was the way the game captured tension, intensity and white knuckle suspense. Having said that, I also found 4 and 5 to be quite enjoyable - 4 remained tense while sacrificing many of the scares and 5 was simply fun. I didn't start complaining much about the "new direction" until I saw gameplay footage of 6. Lost in Nightmares gave me hope that 6 would have more content like that. I was wrong. I don't think the developers need to strip all the new elements, just make a more cohesive blend. Hell, trying to blend the two styles at all would be nice.

I am happy to hear the producer speak out on the issue and address fans concerns. I'd welcome a reboot with open arms.
