GAMING NEWSRUMOR: Half-Life 3 Is An Open-World ShooterPosted on Thursday, September 20 @ 09:42:37 Eastern by Keri_Honea
![]() Ah, Half-Life 3 and rumors. It's kind of the game's schtick for nearly 10 years, isn't it? Valve has said before that they are intentionally not saying anything about Half-Life 3, but it hasn't stopped the latest leak from explaining why Half-Life 3 has been taking so long. According to a French Journaldugamer report, which cites an anonymous source who is "close to Valve," Half-Life 3 has been built, torn down, and rebuilt several times, each taking on a different form of gameplay. The first was allegedly a "pure shooter", and then it transformed into a more open world with gravitational puzzles. The source claims that Valve has decided that the final product will be completely open world that includs NPCs and quests like a good little RPG. Open-world RPG shooters are kind of becoming the "in" thing these days, but this seems like a huge divergence from the traditional Half-Life formula, and we know how much fans like change. The report also claims that Half-Life 3 will be released "after 2013," suggesting a 2014-2015 release on next-generation consoles. If this report is true, then what say you, Half-Life fans? And, of course, the Half-Life series hasn't really been what I would describe as a me-too franchise. I fully expect Half-Life 3 to be as revolutionary as its prequels.

They would have to be really careful, though. Story and characters is extremely important to this franchise - both of which often take a backseat in open world games.

No matter your preference on which one is "Best" both changed the game all together, bringing in countless mods, let alone introducing a new platform to distribute games.
I sincerely believe the 3rd can still do the same...

The thing is, in an open world game the 10 minute action is broken up by long segments of nothing. The way Far Cry 2 did it actually made the game worse by having enemy patrols come after you, which was annoying as ****.
Apart from that, AI is next to impossible to code properly in an open world game. Even in my favorite game, Arma 2, the AI is pretty godawful. They don't even enter buildings for cover.
I'm not saying it will be bad, it might be the first open world shooter to actually get it right, just like Half-Life was the first good story-based, immersive shooter and Half-Life 2 basically acted as the first real current gen game.
Of course, none of this long-winded crap matters...
