Rumor: Onimusha 4 In The Works At Spark Unlimited

Posted on Tuesday, September 25 @ 14:49:06 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Oh man, do I have some great memories attached to the Onimusha franchise. Slashing my way through the first three titles with my brother at my side was an epic experience some eight plus years ago. Fortunately for fans like myself, it looks like Capcom may be planning to release a new entry in the series if a recent report from PSM3 UK (via CVG) proves to be true, and they're looking to Spark Unlimited to make it happen.

Yes, Spark Unlimited. The same studio that brought us the lackluster title Legendary. The same studio that is currently working on Lost Planet 3. The same studio that is teaming up with Team Ninja to create Inafune's Ninja Gaiden Z. If you ask me, it seems they've already got quite a bit on their plate.

According to the rumor, Capcom is looking to Spark Unlimited to work on an "adventure series reboot", which the source believes is Onimusha 4. The last proper entry in the series was Dawn of Dreams which launched back on the PS2 in 2006, so a new title is certainly due.

Who would you like to see bring back the Onimusha franchise? Does it need to be revived at all? Give us your two cents in the comments below.

Uh, hold on here. Didn't Dawn of Dreams count as Onimusha 4? Or are they just ret-conning and ignoring that one?

There's been more than 4 Onimusha titles, I think.

I don't believe it had "4" in the title. The prior PS2 titles had numbers though. It's odd yes, but that's Japanese numbering for you.

Should we expect an Onimusha HD Collection before this one releases?

That sure would make sense, wouldn't it?

Dawn of Dreams HD, Capcom. Make it happen.
And calling the new game Onimusha 4 would be just plain stupid. DoD was 4.

I guess they feel DoD was too different to count as #4, with much more RPG elements, and not the normal control scheme.

There was also Onimusha Tactics and some Onimusha fighting game too.

Onimusha Tactics and Onimusha Blade Warriors (the fighting game) were spin-offs and did nothing with the canon. The franchise had quite a few iconic characters, enough to generate games that were intended compete with Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced and Super Smash Bros. Melee respectively. As for Dawn of Dreams: I thought it similar enough to count it as a fourth entry, but Japanese developers have a tendency to determine unnumbered entries as non-sequiters alongside spin-offs.

Just remake Onimusha 3 with Jean Reno and I'll be happy. I ****ing loved that game.
