Rumor: PSN in for Massive Online Overhaul

Posted on Tuesday, July 5 @ 06:58:27 Eastern by

With the PlayStation 3 launch in 2006 came the PlayStation Network. In contrast, Xbox LIVE launched for the original Xbox in 2002, which has given the service plenty of time over two console lifespans to innovate, refine, and reinvent itself. According to a new rumor, it's now the PSN's turn to get a much-needed makeover.

This new rumor comes from The Register, who claims that Sony is quietly testing a new PSN with a more image-driven layout, with much less focus on text, and that will be more on par with Xbox LIVE and Steam. The look is said to be an "aesthetic layout with logically marked sections and rolodex lists". One of those sections will be a "Deals of the Week". Additionally, a new "live" search will replace the current text-entry method.

The movie store is said to be getting a redesign as well, akin to an "IMDB-style database", which lets you further navigate by producer, director, or actors. The same will be applied to the games store, allowing you to continue browsing by developer or publisher.

If true, these are some significant changes, and ones that the PSN is sorely in need of.

Give me the ability to sort through my Download List instead of trudge through all of the demos and I'd be a happy camper.

Not interested if they don't add the store to their website the way xbox.com does it. I'm really tired going through all the update hoops just to access the store and buy something. I'd rather like to queue it up and download it all at once after the update is done.

Couldn't agree more. I have money sitting in my PSN wallet that I have yet to spend simply because I dont feel like going on my console just to browse and find a game I might want to play.

what the ps3 really needs is a better trophy system, because like it or not, trohpies and achievements are a big part of gaming now that everyone loves, but achievements are so much better. with achievements, you get an overall score that shows how much you have for each game and how much you've done overall, and it's a good way of comparing with friends. Trohpies on the other hand give a percentage for each game and some kind of rank that i've never fully been able to understand. The trophy system could work a lot better if they just re-tooled it so that it was better for comparing against friends, as it is it doesnt really motivate multiple playthroughs like achievements do

Yeah, I'll just reply to this using a part of my blog:

"Earning trophies gain you experience, value-dependant on what level of trophy you got, and level-up your rank. Gamerscore only tallies up all of the point values from your achievements and displays them as one big number.

With trophies, you can see more clearly how skillful a player is. Since the trophies are categorized by difficulty (bronze, silver, gold and platinum,) you can tell if that player has been getting the harder achievements instead of just buying a lot of games and earning the easy ones. "

I suppose that's a good point, but that fact is that if you're comparing with friends you're probably bound to tell them which achievements you've unlocked anyway, when i unlocked 'Mile High Club' on COD4 (twice in a day) I wouldn't shut up about it, it's what competitive people do. And no matter how you put it, the overall score is a lot better than the trophy rank, anyone i ask about the trophy rank says they don't understand it either, also achievements are just more fun to unlock
