Rumor: Sony Patents NFC Tech That Will Deter Next-Gen Used Game Sales

Posted on Thursday, January 3 @ 09:12:38 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Ever since next-gen rumors first began to surface, talk of anti-used game measures have been a major topic of discussion. Since then, the bulk of the gaming community has dismissed such an approach, as doing so could very well be suicidal for any company bold enough to go forward with it.

That line of thinking may very well end today, as it appears Sony has filed a patent for some sort of NFC (near-field communication) technology that will do just that. The patent was first spotted by NeoGAF user gofreak, but we still have yet to track down the official source of the patent itself. As such, we'll have to treat this as rumor for the time being.

The text from the alleged patent is filled with a whole bunch of technical babble, but the general gist of it is that in Sony's next console, games would communicate with the system via NFC, tethering the game to that specific machine, thereby preventing the resale of the software.

Naturally, this opens a whole new can of worms. What if the console breaks? Is this somehow tied to the user's PSN account? Does this mean the console needs to be online at all times?

We'll be sure to fill you in as soon as we know more, but don't expect Sony to confirm the validity of this report anytime soon.

This looks more like a suicide attempt. Sony is looking for a way out, but doesn't know how to tell its parents and friends.

Sony, there's another way. Keep your head up and get help.

Doesn't Skylanders use NFC or something like that? Could it not just be some form of wireless peripheral support? Aside from it just being speculation now anyway.

*sigh* I was worried about this. In fact a buddy of mine and I were talking about this yesterday. If this comes to pass and turns out it is as draconian as it sounds, then I will more than likely invest in a PC gaming rig. Steam is Mother, Steam is Father at that point. :)

Doesn't make sense to me to restrict used game sales.

Gamestop is just one of many used-game shops that makes a mint off selling used games at ridiculous prices - while offering low payoffs to buy them from sellers. Seems to me the ability for these online communities to charge people who buy used games for the "season pass" which allows them to play online should be making even more profit considering the original owner basically threw away their own pass since it was connected to their machine. It's like charging twice to play online.

I don't own many PS3 games. That's mainly becase they typically cost about NZ$120 on release (US$99 at todays rate). I hired a lot of games & finished them in less than a week, but never actually bought second hand. I've also lent a game or two to a friend. I don't feel bad about any of those things. Since investing in a gaming PC, I've bought a whole lot more & probably spent more money (i.e. put more cash in game developers pockets) simply because of price point. If I know I'll finish a game in 3 days, it's not worth $120 but I might be happy to pay $15 a while after it comes out. As long as console games hold a high pricepoint, they simply won't get my money.

If limiting a game sale to a single user means a price drop, then it could be positive, but somehow I doubt that is their plan.
