Sega Further Expanding Its Efforts To PC Gaming Market With Acquisition Of Relic

Posted on Friday, January 25 @ 10:03:45 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Sega has its sights on the online PC market now that the publisher has acquired Relic Entertainment and a number of its intellectual properties.

The company released a statement regarding the purchase, saying that this move “will further advance the provision of various appealing entertainment contents” as well as "further reinforce PC game development capabilities.”

“We are thrilled to have Relic Entertainment join the SEGA family. The acquisition is a strategic fit and a critical step in growing our business,” Sega of America president John Cheng said. “They are a well-respected studio with a reputation for making creative and innovative games and we look forward to seeing what great things we can create together over the coming years.”

While Sega refrained from specifying which IPs they've secured and will be building upon, the company did mention the impressive sales figures of both the Warrhammer 40k and Company of Heroes franchises. I don't know about you, but I'd definitely like to see a sequel to Space Marine.

Can we get a dawn of war more like the first game? I miss actual base building.

If the game were structured as a set of discrete episodes and told a story from multiple perspectives that would be a good idea. If the entire game were in Terminator armor (and the armor was as good as the fluff makes it out to be) it would be *very* hard to get the player the sense of being in real danger. A squad of Terminators can solve problems entire armies of normal troops would find intractable.

Another idea would be to chart the course of an entire campaign or series of battles through multiple perspectives. Let's say it's done old school AvP style (the AvP games that were good) and there's several campaigns.
One campaign could be from the perspective of the guardsman - weak, poorly equipped, horribly outclassed in one-to-one combat, needing to take on foes far superior, carefully coordinate with teammates and take cover as often as possible to survive: to get the feeling right this campaign should be harder than Dark Souls on NG+, it should be in the same class of absurd difficulty belonging to games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Arma 2. In fact, it should probably take as many inspirations as possible from those two games.

Let's hope this ends well. Relic is a talented studio and they've made some truly great games over the years.

How about a new strategy franchise. Please? Dawn of War and CoH are great, although DoW 2 really was more like an action-rpg than a strategy game, but they are starting to get a little old. Especially considering they made like a dozen expansions across the DoW and CoH universe.

I'm also getting a little concerned with how much I know about the Warhammer 40k universe, despite having no interest in, nor having witnessed, the table top game.

Can we please get a Space Marine a la Vanquish?

    I don't care if it's non-cannon because I never played the tabletop.

I believe Relic regained the rights to Homeworld some time ago. It's just a question of whether or not SEGA is interested in working on it.
