Sony Confirms Work On PlayStation 4

Posted on Thursday, May 26 @ 10:21:50 Eastern by

Sony had a lotta 'splainin' to do in a investor call today. Investors were wondering why research and development costs were suddenly so high. Our first thought was due to the NGP, but then Sony's chief financial officer, Masaru Kato, said this:

For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.

Holy. Shit.

Sony PlayStation head honcho Kaz Hirai had said a while back that the PlayStation 3 wasn't even at it's halfway point in its 10-year lifecycle, and that development of a new console hadn't yet begun. I'm sure he was just keeping people from holding out from buying a new PS3 for a new, upcoming console.

E3 is right around the corner, but we'd be extremely shocked to see anything about a PlayStation 4 there. Sony has to focus on the NGP for now, and we doubt that a new console is far enough in development to be debuted.

Who really can say, though. Nintendo will be debuting a new console, and rumors were floating about in regards to a new Xbox. Maybe Sony caught wind of those developments early and decided to get to work on a new console in order to get a jump on the competition.

One thing is for sure. E3 is right around the corner and excitement is at its peak. Stick with GR all week during E3 for up-to-the-minute live coverage of the event.

With the setback Sony incurred at the hands of Microsoft's year early release, I doubt we will see them stick to their initial "10 year lifecycle." If Nintendo and MIcrosoft both release new consoles a couple years ahead of PS4, I think we can all say goodbye to Sony.

Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft aren't exactly mom and pop operations. I doubt it'll be that simple to kill Sony off dude.

Sony's setback had little to do with MS beating them to market. The six hundred dollar initial price tag is what really put them behind, and MS having a just plain superior online experience is what is keeping them behind. The PS3 exclusive games are in my opinion better than the 360 exclusives, which is the only real reason own a PS3 at all. Sony has the games, and the technology (they created BluRay, so if MS wants to use it, every new MS console will be putting money in Sony's pocket). What they need is a better price point. The possible price drop of the PS3 is a start, but any new console they come up with had better be priced in a more reasonable fashion.

How is it that everyone always forgets that you need to pay for XBox Live, and the PSN is free? In what way does that corelate to MS having a better online experience, save for the last few weeks and Sony's giant clusterf*ck? The PS3 is a better system in pretty much every way, price included. IE - XBox = $200 + $60 for every year you wanna play online. PS3 = $300 bucks. Thats it. Where is the confusion coming from?

You know what I love(d) about GR? It wasn't like other sites where almost every day there was a "my console is better" post....Yeah...

What confusion? Everyone knows Live Gold costs money, but in this instance, you get what you pay for. PS3's online experience is lowly experience. The shop is poorly organized, they never have deals on anything, and apparently they haven't bothered to upgrade their security software for the last three years. If all you want to do is play CoD online, then I suppose it will do that (most of the time anyway) but I expect more than that, and if it costs a few extra dollars to get proper support, then I have no problem spending the money.
