E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Sony Cutting 10,000 Jobs

Posted on Monday, April 9 @ 12:24:02 Eastern by

The Nikkei newspaper has reported that Sony is cutting 6 percent of its global workforce, as decided by new CEO Kazuo Hirai. This loss of approximately 10,000 jobs comes primarily due to the company's ailing TV business, with most of the cuts coming from its "chemicals and small and midsize LCD operations".

Earlier this year in February, Sony reported an extraordinary loss of $2 billion in net income.

Hirai will have a briefing this Thursday to investors on Sony's plans to recover. Yuuki Sakurai, head of fund manager Fukoko Capital, is not surprised by this move but he has a warning:
Under a new CEO, it's easier to cut jobs or go in a new direction. One of the things I'd like to see is that shift their resources to other areas outside TVs... If they stick to TVs, they may have to fight a war may not be able to win.
The good news then is that Sony will likely rebuild its strength through its other outlets such as mobile devices and video games, particularly the PS3, Vita, and the PS4 "Orbis".

Hmmm. I've been concerned about Sony for a while now, and this is the second massive layoff in as many years. They'd better turn things around soon, or else we'll be left with a two-console generation, and that would be bad for us consumers.

Actually, it's my understanding that the video game division is the only part of Sony that IS working. Nintendo, however, is probably going to make it a two-console generation soon. In fact, this generation has felt like there's only 2 consoles imo.

Sony's video game division is making money, that's true. But they're still pretty deep in the red, and the rest of the company is dragging them down. So it's still a serious worry.

And your comment about Nintendo has me confused. Are you implying you think they'll put one of the other two out of business, or buy them up, or something?
