Sony Demos Vita's Free Augmented Reality Suite

Posted on Wednesday, February 8 @ 09:07:54 Eastern by

On the PlayStation Blog, Sony has posted a video demonstrating two of the three AR games that will be available to download for free as part of the Vita's Augmented Reality Suite.

The first of the two games is Fireworks, which can be played either on a tabletop with the AR cards including in each Vita retail box. Fireworks shoot into the "sky", and you tap them on Vita's screen to set them off and explode them.

The second game is Cliff Diver. The goal here is to make your character, Diver Dan, jump off cliffs and diving boards into the surface below.

The third game in the AR Suite, which isn't shown in the video, will be Table Soccer, which projects a full Soccer game onto a tabletop.

All three titles will be available on February 22nd for free on the PSN. See them in action below:

This isn't really utilising AR as part of the game, it's just slightly enhancing the experience - you could play those games without the AR cards, and they would function in exactly the same way for example. The only difference being in both games you have no control of the camera. AR should be more involving... no?

Why don't they do something cool like....have AR glasses and a gun attachment for some sort of FPS. That just sounds cooler to me.

seems like a total gimmick. Are there any release date games taking real advantage of this technology?
