Sony Says 3DS Success Means There Is A Demand For Portable Gaming

Posted on Friday, January 20 @ 09:51:13 Eastern by Keri_Honea
It's been an ongoing debate for the last couple of years at least  about whether iOS and Android devices have completely taken over the portable gaming market to the point that gamers no longer want or need a dedicated handheld gaming device like a 3DS or a PSP. It is kind of easier to just haul your phone with you everywhere instead of adding in a gaming handheld as well, especially since so many "hardcore" games have been and are currently being ported over to iOS and Android.

Gamasutra interviewed Sony's CEO about the state of the portable gaming market to get Sony's feel on what was happening and what they were seeing from their own poor sales of the Vita in JapanAndrew House's response?
Normally we don't really reference the competition a lot when we talk about the PlayStation business, but in this case it's perhaps a little salutary that the sales of the 3DS have been exceedingly good. I think that shows that there is, in general, a lot of demand for a gaming primary portable device, which is how I would describe Vita.
Mr. House further went on to say that the Vita has so much more to offer over the 3DS.

What I think we've done is point to a market that has really started out with potentially casual games on other devices, but now wants a deeper or better or more premier gaming experience.

Time will inevitably tell. I personally want the Vita to succeed in the US when it launches on February 22nd. It has a far better software launch lineup that PlayStation portables of the past, and if they want to tout that the Vita offers a deeper and better gaming experience, they need to keep those big name titles coming. I still haven't decided if I'm going to pick one up on release date or not, but I'm sure the gadget whore in me won't resist for too long.

I just got my first Android phone last November, and if the selection offered on the Android market is dominating the selection available for the PSP and 3DS (of which I have neither), then I would have to claim that the portable games market simply does not exist.

I didn't buy a DS or a PSP so i could have a "portable gaming platform" I bought it because there were SPECIFIC games you could only get on those consoles, that I wanted to play. I wanted to play New Mario Bros. I wanted to play Mario Kart DS. I wanted to play Phoenix Wright. I also wanted to play P3P, Valkyria Chronicles, and every RPG re-release I missed the first time around on the original console (I am a major sucker for RPG re-releases.)

I'm not going to buy a 3DS or a Vita for the sake of having a "portable" gaming console. I'm going to buy it because they are going to put games on it that I want. I already want a 3DS for Mario 3D, Mario Kart 7, Star Fox and Ocarina of Time. The Vita is going to have Persona 4 Golden (that alone is almost worth the cost of the Vita, P4 being one of my favourite games ever). These are games I can wait for a while, but I WILL buy them eventually.

I've owned an iPhone, and I now own an Android. Neither of these systems are offering me the opportunity to play these specific games. As a matter of fact, neither of them offer me ANY games that I would be willing to purchase an entire system just to play. So, unless Sony and Nintendo stop making quality games for these handheld systems, I think there will still be a market for them, even if they do get smaller.

Though following that same train of thought, if the iOS and the Android really want to make a dent in the portable gaming market, they need to start offering some seriously substantial games. Give me an actual full on New Mario game for the Android, or a full blown JRPG. Give me THOSE kinds of games, and we'll talk.

I cant wait for the ps vita. Im not particularly thrilled to lug around a third portable device. Yet i have no doubt the vita will garner the bulk of my leisure time.
The chance to play games akin to limbo and super meat boy on the go is what tickles my pickle. Ive no doubt smart phones and tablets could, with a simple periphiral meet my needs. Alas neither the harware nor the software is there.

the CEO of Sony has to pay for a Vita? i'd assume he could just ask for one... ya know, being the CEO n all.
