Sony Selling U.S. Headquarters For $1.1 Billion

Posted on Friday, January 18 @ 08:56:05 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Sony has agreed to sell its 37-story headquarters building in New York. According to Bloomberg, the building will be sold for for $1.1 billion to commercial property firm the Chetrit Group. This will bring in approximately $770 million for the company.

“Given the opportunities and challenges in the current economic and real estate landscape, selling 550 Madison now is a timely and logical strategic move,” said Nicole Seligman, President of Sony Corp. of America Nicole. Sony's New York employees will continue to work out of this location for up to three more years, while the company looks for a new place in Manhattan to lease.

Sony boss Kaz Hirai has made it his primary goal to get the company back on track to profitability, and this is certainly a step in the right direction. Sony is currently re-evaluating its financial forecast in light of the sale, and as of right now, they're anticipating $223 million in profit for the fiscal year.

Agreed - SONY has failed on every single level.

10 years ago, I used to only buy their products, but each and every product seemed to be purposefully flawed.

#1 mini disk players without LCD remotes or built in FM radios.
#2 PSP with no right analog stick.
#3 overly expensive computers for no good reason.
#4 A defunct Singeltrac to make good Twisted Metal, Warhawk, etc games. This caused me to not give a damn about PS2 and to completely shun PS3 in favor of XBOX.

NOW...they're getting their asses kicked by Apple on both the computer and portable device markets and even Vizio is a bigger name in TV's.

If SONY disappeared I wouldn't miss them.

What you are seeing here is Japan loosing it's edge to China. We complain about American jobs going to the Chinese, but the truth is, the Chinese are hurting everyone in SE Asia who we used to manufacture in.

An interesting empirical datapoint. Strictly speaking, it is not necessary for a publisher/manufacturer such as Sony to maintain a physical headquarters in the states. However, that they can no longer afford to do so as they have in the past is a very strong indicator. At least as far as video games go, Sony's days may be numbered.

dude, I agree with you on most of what you sad, except that "Sony's video games days may be numbered". How do you figure that ?
If anything, they're just creating a little wiggle-room in their profit and loss statement. This is nothing other than a sign that the company is feeling the economic crunch, much like other multi-national companies nowadays, and has to react to it. They're even more likely to sell off a bunch of their other branches before taking out sony computer entertainment. Why would they do that ? that's like shelving their walkman because of financial difficulty,,,,,, you don't stop production of your best selling revenue stream to combat financial loss mate - plain stupid.

If the expenses of assembling the revenue stream are sufficiently high you do. There's solid evidence (It's on my blog under Sony's Immediate Future) that R&D work for a PS4, including Dev Kits (without which there can be no third party support) has yet to be fully undertaken. If the evidence is sound and is being read properly then it logically follows that they may be cutting their losses and running from the field. I can't blame them for that. Sony isn't merely a maker of video game hardware but also of a broad range of electronic products. Ceasing production where profits have vaporized due to both increased competition and a loss of favor with consumers is not a bad idea.

I feel you bro. My previous reply was based on a few articles I read off BBC news (couldn't post up sources),, anyways I think the main thing is I don't see them cutting off the Computer Entertainment branch. Seems like too much of an admission of defeat - especially so within the Japanese cultural context (having to sign off previous console title holder ps2 would be more than degrading for the company, let alone the owners whose livelihood relies on not losing face). The way I see it, Sony are gonna have to change up their model. If they would turn tail and run, it would only be to emerge with some kind of diversified version of a tablet or phone to penetrate the market that's getting slowly eaten up by apple. The market share they've gained thus far would be like throwing away a goldmine in the face of declining revenue, short term it makes sense, but in the long run it would be impossibly stupid. I surely hope otherwise.

I believe the franchises they own are generally well-received. They might not be putting them on their own platforms but they might still have their software developers make games.
