Sony's New 4K Resolution Standard Demonstrated Using Gran Turismo 5

Posted on Wednesday, October 3 @ 11:46:05 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

Ever wonder what Gran Turismo 5 would look like on steroids? Well bam, here it is.

Using four PlayStation 3 consoles, Polyphony Digital will be showing off a tech demo of Gran Turismo 5 running at "4k resolution" throughout the month of October. The demo is an effort to show off Sony's new resolution standard for Bravia TVs, a standard that some speculate will be supported with the next PlayStation. Whether or not that's the case remains to be excited, but any opportunity to see Gran Turismo 5 on a massive screen powered by several consoles is hard to say no to.

Unfortunately, the demonstrations are only in Japan, but we'll try to get our hands on some footage to save you a trip across the ocean.

Is it actually rendering at 4k or is it just upscaled 480p or 720p like the ps3 does with other games? If so its not really 4k rendering sorry sony. Hook a high powered pc up to it.

Not that it really matters: unless the screen is eight feet tall. It's almost impossible to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p after a distance of about six feet.

I can tell the different on my TV. Probably because its a plasma. I can't stand watching anything under 1080p. Some Xbox 360 games that are just upscaled are a real eyesore (Silent Hill: Downpour was a really bad recent offender).

Not exactly coming to a home near you: Sony's website shows the 4k resolution TV as 84 inches, and $25,000. Also, this TV won't do much good without 4k resolution content, the likes of which isn't exactly falling from the skies.

I guess my advice is to start saving now, and by the time you can afford one, maybe it won't be so far ahead the curve that it is so limited in usefulness.

4k is the next step in TV tech, but I still think its going to be a few years until the price gets to a point where it can go mainstream. I would guess atleast another 5 years until 4k is affordable.

By the time we all have next-gen consoles, this'll be the norm. So about.....2-3 years.

Not sure how it will be for gaming but unless you're getting a ridiculously large screen, 4K is useless. There have been studies showing no difference noticeable between 720p and 1080p on a 50 inch T.V at a 10 foot viewing distance. Quadrupling that resolution will not produce a significantly sharper image unless we're talking 134 inches. So movie theaters or sitting really close. Where it would be beneficial is with passive 3D. Passive 3D basically cuts the resolution in half for each eye, harming the image quality. A 4K t.v with passive 3D would definitely remedy that. But yeah, for your standard user, I don't think we will see much difference. Plus it will be a few more years before the format becomes standard...
