Sony's Patent For DualShock/Move Hybrid Controller Approved

Posted on Friday, November 30 @ 12:21:37 Eastern by Alex_Osborn
Ever wished you could rip your PlayStation 3 controller apart and have two Move wands? Yeah, me neither, but it looks like Sony's patent application for the “Hybrid Separable Motion Controller” that was filed last year has just been approved.

The patent, which was first spotted by thesixthaxis, details the controller's magnetic connection, allowing users to pull the device apart and connect it back together with ease. As one would expect, each half has accelerometer, speaker and vibration support.

What do you think of this crazy controller? Do you think Sony's motion controller is popular enough to merit the production of such a device? Let us know in the comments below.

It does look kinda silly, but if they made it standard issue with the PS3 or even their next console, it could certainly reduce the barrier-to-entry for motion gaming.

I think one of the biggest problems with getting Move and Kinect into widespread sales and use (aside from terrible motion games) was actually having to buy the accessories separately, while Nintendo had their motion controls right out of the box as the system's key feature. But even Nintendo had that problem when trying to get people in with Wii MotionPlus.

Great, now we can all lose our controllers in halves too.

I had this idea so long ago, it's officially outdated. Man, I'm good. Seriously, who didn't just think they should've done this with the Move to begin with?

It's absolutely INCREDIBLE HOW STUPID SONY IS.

so you people out there with those ******* Decepticon-***** "Move" controllers really prefer that to the GUN CON II with blowback?

If you truly do...then you have no idea what motion-based gaming is supposed to be.

    I'm already 100% certain I won't be buying a PS4.

If the Move actually had games, I'd actually get that. It looks weird, but the DualShock is the most comfortable controller in existence, and using it for motion controls could work perfectly.

I never liked the Dualshock controller. Maybe it's my big hands, but I never found it that comfortable. That and the mushy analogue buttons never felt right, it always felt like I have to press them harder so my thumbs end up more sore than when I play with other controllers.

I got the move bundle for Christmas one year and only used it a couple of times. I respect what they're trying to do. I do think modular controllers are the future.
