Sony's Yoshida Says PS4 Won't Come Soon

Posted on Monday, August 22 @ 11:49:26 Eastern by Josh_Laddin

Ok, so the PS4 development is already underway. Gotta stay ahead of the curve, right? Unfortunately, if any of you thought we'd be seeing Sony's next-generation console anytime soon, Sony Computer Entertainment president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida's about to dash your hopes.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Yoshida said point-blank that "as far as we are concerned, we have no desire now to do that [release a new home console]." Hear that whoosh of air? That's the sound of thousands of fanboys' hopes deflating.

He was quite a bit more vague when it came to actually determining when they would do it, though:

"Looking at the platform cycle, when the platform becomes something game developers are not able to improve their creations with, that's the time we have to really seriously consider shifting to the next generation."

Yoshida seems convinced that the PS3 still has a lot of life left in it. But citing the decidedly lackluster Move as a reason for why there's "a lot more we can do from the game development standpoint" isn't going to convince many others. If the Wii U fares decently and Microsoft moves to make the Xbox 720, I'm confident that Sony's gonna change their tune lickety-split.

Why the heck would we need another PlayStation right now, anyway?

You hear that? That's the sound of me not having to spend money on a new console right now. Oh, that other sound, just me giggling like a little girl.

When EVERY game looks as great as the Uncharted series, then we'll be ready for a new console generation.

Which doesn't look as good a Crysis 2 on max setting on a PC, which leads me to believe that the hardware is already outdated. When's the last time during this gen that a PC port looked just as good as the original? Answer: Never. At first it was a slight gap, and the gap has gradually widened over time.

    This is me quoting Merlin:

“On average for the price of a console you can build a PC with more power and uses then the said console. Well at least for the 299.99 and even now the 249.99 price tags of the ps3 and xbox. The wii at 150 is well... id have to hunt around but i probably could hold true to my statement still heh.

In the end my gripe is still the most valid one. Consoles hold back how good games could be because of outdated tech by the time they even launch its already usually a year or two behind current tech and then with the 6 year lifespan? it just holds everything back. Consoles have completed skipped out on Dx 10 and we are in Dx 11 land now with 12 right around the corner soon.”

“Also consoles are holding games back graphically in major ways.

I could go into a long list of examples buuuut all i have to do is point to battlefield 3 cranked up to full Dx11 glory and just say this. THIS IS WHAT WE COULD ALL HAVE if consoles went so far behind the times always.”
