Square Enix Registers Deus Ex: Human Defiance Trademark

Posted on Wednesday, February 27 @ 07:18:06 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

It appears that just yesterday, Square Enix filed a trademark for "Deus Ex: Human Defiance."

Considering how popular and successful Eidos Montreal's Deus Ex: Human Revolution was, it seems all too obvious that this is likely going to be the name of the sequel. It is also important to note, however, that Square is looking into having a movie made as well, so there's always the chance that this trademark is instead tied to the film.

I don't know about you, but I'm hoping it's for another game.

One of my relatives did a lot of the market research for the sequel, some of the suggested subtitles were just awful my favourite being Deus Ex: Human Apartheid.

Valve, Square is not. They lack the hey to getting the right people to make a movie about your game. But wasn't Human Revolution a prequel to the original Deus Ex? Are we going to see a trilogy of prequels here, because we know how that works out, sometimes.

Hopefully not. Human Revolution elegantly sets up the events of the first Deus Ex without commenting on Invisible War in any way (which is both its greatest narrative strength, and its weakness, the straight-jacket was unavoidable but they did make the best of it) so they've more or less finished with it. A good idea might be some kind of interquel cutting between the first game and Invisible War. Depending how much creative freedom they have in setting it up they might be able to retcon large elements of IW's story. It would be an opportunity worth taking.

How would it work with those endings from the first game? I mean I would love if they just scrapped those endings and kept the story going.
