Square Enix Will Remake FFVII After They Create A New FF Game That Tops It

Posted on Tuesday, June 26 @ 12:21:35 Eastern by Keri_Honea

At Square Enix's annual shareholder briefing, CEO Yoichi Wada said that they company would remake fan-favorite Final Fantasy VII IF they make a Final Fantasy title that surpasses FFVII in terms of both quality and sales. Thus far, the company has failed to do just that (obviously). Wada explained that if the company remade FFVII now, "the series would be done for." You know, because it isn't already.

In other words, folks, stop asking already. The only FF game that will beat FFVII in quality and sales would be a remake of FFVII, so obviously this vicious cycle is never going to happen. At least, it won't happen with the current regime.

I personally don't want the game remade because I think a lot of its charm would be lost, but at the same time, I wouldn't mind if they did so fans could shut up about it already and maybe then the FF series would come to a close. It seems to be dying anyway, so might as well let it go out with a bang.

They did, twice already. It's called Final Fantasy VIII and IX.

I agree with you about VIII but IX started to take things in a different direction with new gameplay elements.

To be honest, I'm not sure if they did a re-release of VII that the gameplay would withstand the test of time. Turn-based JRPG's have come a long way since the 90's (Lost Odyssey!! Persona!!!) and I think a "successful" remake would require more than just HD graphics and possible voice talent.

I hope they would consider innovating the gameplay and battle system as well

    True words, Link.

At the risk of being ripped apart, I'm going to add X to that list as well.

they will never top VII so umm ya

a remake would be great as long as they dont change the core game and really theres no reason to, keep everything exactly the same just use new graphics and add some voice actors

i wouldnt be opposed to new features but only if they dont break the core game we know and love, the combat system should be left exactly as it was, the new crap in XIII was just horrible and is the sole reason i quit after an hour, i also wouldnt object to expanding the story a bit but again the core game cant be changed or it will fail

They shouldn't remake 7 because it's the most overrated one in the series. Remake 6 or 9.

I do love VII the most (first one I ever played, so there's definitely a nostalgia angle there), VIII's story doesn't make any damn sense but I did enjoy the combat. Now remaking VI... that's an idea I could get behind. That game was a kick in the teeth story-wise, had some great characters, and a TON of people have never played it. Hell, I haven't played it in well over 10 years because I don't have the time to dedicate to the grinding that SNES RPGs required.

I want them to remake the one with Kefka and Locke. Which one was that? It was an SNES one.

I liked imagining what each character's voices sounded like in my head. I think a remake of any game that uses text for storytelling would be ruined with the addition of voice actors.
