Square: Final Fantasy X HD Update Coming "Soon," Versus XIII "Still Currently In Development"

Posted on Friday, January 11 @ 10:54:43 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

It's been a while since we've heard anything about Final Fantasy X HD, and given Square's track record (what, with Versus XIII and all), many gamers (like me) have grown worried that it'll never see the light of day.

Thankfully, Square Enix plans to clear the air in the very near future. The publisher's European branch told one of its inquisitive Twitter followers that “the world will get answers soon, we promise.”

The Final Fantasy X high-def update was announced back at TGS 2011 for both the PlayStation 3 and the Vita during Sony's press conference.

Now Versus XIII on the other hand... that's a completely different matter. Square Enix Europe also commented on the status of this FFXIII spin-off, confirming on Twitter that the game is "still currently in development," but "no dates to announce at this time, but we'll keep you informed. Promise."

Square Enix is sure making an awful lot of promises. Let's hope they hold to them in the coming months.

This either means both games will be excellent, as they're taking extra time to tweak them, or they'll be awful because they're afraid of botching them and will succumb to a self-fulfilled prophecy. Final Fantasy, what happened to you? You used to be so lovely, and now you're a used-up old whore.

Square would never do it unless they were on the verge of bankruptcy, again. I heard from some place or someone that Square won't touch FF6 or FF7 since they consider them as masterpieces and don't want to change anything. Though you would think a simple HD port of either would make them jillions.

Then I hope they go on the verge of bankruptcy again. The only reason I bought the re-release of FF7 on the pc was to signal to them that the pc market was there for FF re-releases.

Are you talking about the 1990s PC version of the game?

The biggest problem in terms of re-releases on the PC is how Final Fantasy VII and VIII both failed when Square ported them to the PC years ago. I'm surprised they even put VII back onto the PC again, but I doubt that its going to be that easy for Square to look to the PC for re-releases.

If square paid attention to signals sent to them by fans, there would be a FFVII HD already.

They know what we want better than we know what we want.
I thought I was willing to pay $100 for a Final Fantasy VII HD thing, but Square Enix told me that no, I don't want that game, I want other things instead. :D

Just to be clear for those who missed it. FF7 was re-release on the pc this past summer, its $11.99 now. It works perfectly on newer operating systems. Its the only one so far that they have re-released. It does run at a higher resolution but it still preserves all the old textures and models and the game has been left unchanged. It also supports achievements, and cloud saves.

I know people complain about the over-saturation of Call of Duty, Guitar Hero (back when they were still being made and releasing 2-3 titles per year), and all the variations of the Street Fighter games, but dear sweet Jesus how many Final Fantasy games do you friggin' need?

If this is a serious question, then in my opinion, it's because one or two Guitar Hero or Call of Duty per gen is enough. Most everything that doesn't end after 6 hours can be added with DLC.

Aside from being turn-based JRPGs and named Final Fantasy each game is laregly different than the next in combat, story, characters, and world lore. From 1 to 13 the settings seem to advance too. Early on it had a sort of wizards and dragons medieval setting and slowly advanced through Steampunk, diesel (IMO 7 was cyber/diesel mix and the best setting), to now very futuristic.

They could call it anything I just want more JRPGs damn it.

Happy to hear they finally commented on this. I've been waiting for X HD to buy a VITA but still on the fence. Like most fans I still have X for PS2 and basically the entire FF collection twice over on PSP/PS1 so I would feel a little silly.

By this point I was sure that Versus was going to somehow become XV, been so long since we heard anything. The dark modern setting and Crisis Core battle style will definitely be a change of pace, looking forward to hearing more in another 2 years. :D

Also, why the big deal over FF7 HD remake? Aside from the fact most people have played it multiple times, you can get it on PSP/PS3 for like 10 bucks and enjoy it all over again assuming you didn't play yourself sick of it the first year it was out. Seems like a waste of time. Maybe 10 + years of asking for this gave SE the impression we only care about visuals, I present you with FFXIII! :P

lol hard to argue with this! I swear those things hold her on that cliff near the ending.

No doubt it would be amazing and I would buy it, twice probably. I just gave up hope years ago.

I think you guys are confused(the ones asking for a FF7 HD). I believe you want a FF7 REMAKE, Cause I sure as hell don't need to see flat, polys upscaled.

It's quite foolish of SE not to have done this. It's practically a license to print money. The could also redo Xenogears with completely new HD 2D sprites, re release einhander in the states, or remake PE. All games would certianlly make them plenty of bank, and please customers at the same time.

But then I guess they know what they are doing...
