SSX Will Have Online Pass

Posted on Monday, January 30 @ 08:44:43 Eastern by Keri_Honea
This headline shouldn't shock anyone. If anything, it should have been expected as online passes are pretty much EA's MO. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will have an online pass, we all know Mass Effect 3 will have an online pass, the Madden games require an online pass, so why wouldn't EA slap an online pass on SSX?

Even though EA hasn't come out and said, "Yes, SSX will have an online pass," the proof has come in a SSX video that Giant Bomb posted earlier last week. In this video, the online pass option can be seen in one of the game's menus:

Since EA hasn't made a formal announcement as of yet, we can only speculate what the online pass will unlock, but I think we can assume it will grant access to online multiplayer gameplay. In other words, it will grant players access to pretty much the only feature anyone who plays SSX cares about.

    Well that isn't good...

online passes are probably my least favorite trend of this generation.

It will also guarantee zero used/rental revenue for stores.

I dislike Online passes but not the idea for giving incentives to buy new. Dragon Age gave you the Shale DLC pack if you bought new, but hiked the price up if you wanted to get it after buying used. Skate 3 gave you a code for the Skate Share pack if you bought new. I think giving away content is better than cutting out online, but cutting out online is probably cheaper and will get more people to buy new since online is probably more important to most than content.

I wasn't gonna play it online anyway.

Gonna buy it used and laugh about it.

Online passes are great because they deter used purchases without really punishing people who buy new.

This doesn't bother me too much as i have been so excited about getting this game there's no way i'm going to wait to buy it 2nd hand. But i don't fully understand the developers issues with 2nd hand games. Sometimes i don't get around to buying games when the are new or don't hear about them until well after they are released, so i'll go pick up a cheap 2nd copy and play it. What then usually happens if i really enjoy the game is i get hooked onto it and then buy the sequels when they come out. For example i picked up a used copy of Bad Company a few years ago and since then have bought Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3 new, had i not been able to play Bad Company online for free i don't think i would have enjoyed it enough to warrant spending nearly £100 on new games since.
