Star Wars: The Old Republic Will Be Free To Play This Fall

Posted on Tuesday, July 31 @ 13:02:56 Eastern by Keri_Honea

In case you missed the gazillion tweets on Twitter, BioWare has officially announced (via press release) that Star Wars: The Old Republic will go free-to-play this fall.

Free-to-play-ers can experience SWTOR for free up to level 50, which does include all eight classes available to subscribers. There are some restrictions, however, but BioWare says that all of these restrictions can be removed with microtransactions.

If you're already a subscriber and you're wondering what perks you'll receive for being loyal, BioWare has not forgotten you. Subscribers will automatically receive an allowance of Cartel Coins, the store currency, allowing them to buy customizable gear and other toys that the commoners won't have access to. If you sign up before SWTOR goes F2P, then you'll still receive this in-game windfall.

I called this before the game was released and was smoked on every forum I went to.

On that note, let me predict for the 10th time that The Secret World will be free-to-play within a year.

Call me crazy, but at least when I add two and two together I don't end up with seven.

I didn't want it to happen but deep down knew it would. So far what I've read makes me hope they'll at least do hybrid (like lotro) f2p. Can't say we didn't see it coming though. Especially since a lot of the game already seems set up for cash shop. the legacy system is going to be the first to go for real $.

Yeah. I know what you mean. three months ago, I made the same statement. The game is like a firework. All flash and bang, but the excitement only lasts a few seconds. There is no substance or depth to this game, and feels like a rehash of WoW, minus the imagination. Did Bioware expect to make a Star Wars skinned WoW in hopes that the Star Wars name itself would be enough to garner our support? Ever since they were bought out by EA, there quality in games has severely declined. I hope that Dragon Age 3 will redeem them.

lol yeah the swtor forums up to launch was the most entertainment ive ever gotten from rabbid fanboys.

I had high hopes for swtor but after I got my jedi to max level a week in, I realized there wasnt much to do and that I wouldnt keep up a subscription.

(that and the CE vendor was a complete ripoff. Wasted alot of money. I use the statues lightsaber to clean my waterpipe and I like to make the statue hold a doobie where the lightsaber would be.)

Yeah, Guild Wars 2 is obviously going to be a lot stronger than SWTOR at launch.

GW2 has a lot of hype imo. It's not going to flop, because of several factors, but I doubt it's going to be the godsend I keep reading about (especially on mmorpg.com forumns...). I'll still get it shortly after release if not day of release though.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. Another one bites the dust. They'll start selling cosmetic fluff and within half a year it will be a bunch of p2w advantage items like every other f2p game has done. Guess I might be moving to Guild Wars 2 sooner than I thought.

Just read about this on another forum (not video game related) and came here to see if you guys had a post on it. Of course you did! GR always delivers. Pretty excited for this.
