Steve Jobs, 1955-2011

Posted on Wednesday, October 5 @ 17:22:15 Eastern by

Whether you'd like to admit it or not, the man has left an indelible mark on gaming through the development of platforms that helped birth and revolutionize the way consumers affect and are affected by software.

Apple posted the following on their website:

Steve Jobs 1955-2011

Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.

I can't help but think of all the typing tutorials and Oregon Trail I played on the Apple IIEs at my elementary school. Jobs stepped away from leadership at Apple, personally filling his position as well as other positions, before focusing on his new role on the board of directors.

The iPhone 4S was revealed yesterday.

Little did he know (in that pic) that he wouldn't start making a lot of money until he created the iPod....

Pretty much. Apple was basically on its death knell until then.

He made a LOT of money before the iPod... the iPod just made him a LOT MORE money. He was forced out, started another company, then when Apple purchased that company he came back to the board and didn't leave. Apple went sharply downhill during the time he was away, then the iMac started the road back to profitability.

One fact about Steve, just to link him to gaming even more directly, is that one of his first jobs (maybe his FIRST job) was as a programmer at Atari. He prompted the idea of a personal computer line to Nolan Bushnell, who was supportive but not willing to put Atari at risk by starting a computer line.

Eventually Atari DID start producing their own computers, but only after the Apple II became such a success. So video games started Steve Jobs, in a way. There's also a pretty terrible story about Jobs bilking Woz out of a lot of money breaking down Breakout bricks, but that's another story for another day.

This saddens me, I only hope he didn't suffer much before he passed away.

    Another one:

Love or hate the company or the man, you have to admit that both were innovative and produced quality products. R.I.P. Bill Gates.
