Sucker Punch Talks More About Infamous: Second Son

Posted on Friday, February 22 @ 09:57:16 Eastern by Keri_Honea

Sucker Punch announced the next game in the inFamous series at the PlayStation event earlier this week, and now, Brian Fleming, co-founder and producer of the developer, shares more about Infamous: Second Son on the PlayStation blog.

Second Son takes place seven years after Cole McGrath's adventures in Empire City and New Marais. Anyone exhibiting any super powers, or "bio-terrorism", is immediately handed over to the Department of Unified Protection (DUP). Their job is to ensure that there is never another Empire City or New Marais catatrosphe. Enter new protagonist Delsin Rowe, who recently discovered he has ability to manipulate and transform into smoke, and who has decided he will not go quietly into that good night.

"Along the way, Delsin is going to ask questions that are not just relevant to the world of Second Son – but to the world we all live in today," Fleming said in his post. "A world where we are often instructed to surrender our freedoms to help improve our security. Ben Franklin once wrote 'Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.' Is he right?"

Second Son will also take place in Seattle, not a fictional city based on an actual US city. And yes, expect some sort of morality bar to affect both your decisions and the outcome of the story, like any good inFamous game.

The smoke mechanics sound cool and I'm sure the graphics look gorgeous, but if there's not enough different from previous inFAMOUS games, I probably won't buy.

And I mean, Sony's given me both previous inFAMOUS games for free (sorta) so I don't see a lot of value in the franchise.

Why does this sound (and look) so much like Prototype?
And doesn't this completely destroy Infamous 2's evil ending? What's the point of making two endings if SP then decides to erase one from existence? And considering how perfect both endings were, the simple act of making a sequel lessens its impact. (see Bioshock 2)

Good point, but a lot of games have sequels and just go with the good ending of the previous game. I believe Metal Gear Solid did this with Meryl. Oh, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed would be another example.

It happens in Star Wars games a lot, going back the Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight and Knights of the Old Republic. I think there was an article that stated its by design in Star Wars that most characters are inherently good in the overall canon, regardless of how individual players choose to play.
Any game with a morality system that doesn't want to directly tie in individual players previous plays is going to have to choose a story and go with it for the sequel. Even those that do don't always have two entirely different experiences for returning players. Mass Effect 3 did it from Mass Effect 2, what was the point of either destroying the Collector Base (Good) or keeping it (Bad) when the Illusive Man still gets the tech from it in 3?

"Morality bars" ignore a whole host of truly gray moral choices, and are frankly outdated. These games love to purport choice, but the only real choice if you want the best powers is to evil be an almost absurdly evil sadistic-for-the-sake-of-it prick or a completely benevolent saint. You want real moral choices? Play the Walking Dead. No bar. No special prizes for being "good" or "evil". Just a little girl's opinion.

And when you upset her it crushes your soul. Amazing storytelling.
