The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3 Reveals First-Person Shooter Mass Effect

Posted on Thursday, March 15 @ 13:18:09 Eastern by

You might be happy, or completely pissed with the way Mass Effect 3 turned out. You might also be "meh." There's a whole range of emotions you could be going through in regards to Mass Effect 3. Nothing would surprise us at this point.

Although it might surprise you to know that BioWare Montreal was developing a competitive multiplayer first-person shooter spinoff titled Mass Effect Team Assault in 2010 before redirecting that effort towards the now stellar Mass Effect 3 multiplayer mode.

GameTrailers and SpikeTV's Geoff Keighley reports:

The goal was simple, to create a standalone multiplayer experience in the Mass Effect universe that would mix the play styles of Unreal Tournament and Battlefield 1943—and likely be released as a downloadable game.

The app features more of the image above, and even includes video of the prototype. There's a ton more in The Final Hours of Mass Effect 3 including more on the development of the game many of you are playing today and a look at the inside of BioWare's development studio.

For some reason I immediately thought of Halo looking at the screenshot. This would still be awesome, if only they could replicate vehicle systems as good as BF series.

The app also shows they had no idea how to end the trilogy as late as November, that the prothean DLC was originally part of the game before removed (despite what Casey Hudson claimed in an interview), that they removed a large portion of dialogue with both Anderson and Starchild while o the Normandy (because it made it feel too long)

Very displeased with how the series ended, not surprising though given the lead writer left. I forgave them after DA:2, no ones perfect, but this has forced me to lose all faith in Bioware's ability to produce worthwhile content. The fact that these are paid writers who completely missed the massive number of plot wholes with the ending really pisses me off. Than pile the DLC fiasco, the lack of transparency when discussing how the series will end (claiming it is all based off choice and that there will be no cut A, B, or C ending, and that all questions will be answered when interviewed in January, despite the app showing notes in November that they were all pleased with the generic choose an ending)

**** bioware, valve is the last bastion of gaming for anyone looking for a developer that listens/participates with fans

    This.

Didn't know the lead writer up and left. Was it Drew Karpyshyn? I enjoyed his Mass Effect novels.
