The Last of Us Possibly Delayed [Update: It's Official]

Posted on Wednesday, February 13 @ 12:26:15 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

[UPDATE]: Sony has just confirmed that yes, The Last of Us will be delayed. Instead of launching in May, the game will release on Friday (yes, Friday) June 14th. Here's an official statement from Naughty Dog:

As a team we pride ourselves on setting a very high quality bar for every aspect of our games – gameplay, story, art, design, technology and more. We want to make sure The Last of Us raises that bar even further – for ourselves, and most importantly, our fans.

As we entered the final phase of development for The Last of Us, we came to realize just how massive Joel and Ellie’s journey is. But instead of cutting corners or compromising our vision, we came to the tough decision that the game deserved a few extra weeks to ensure every detail of The Last of Us was up to Naughty Dog’s internal high standards.

[Original Story]: Electronics retailer Best Buy has changed the release date for The Last of Us on their site to June 18th. Late last year, Naughty Dog announced that the game would be launching on May 17th, so does this mean the game is getting a delay?

Other retailers including Amazon and GameStop still have the release date set for May, but perhaps Best Buy jumped the gun and outed the news early. Sony has yet to clear up the mystery, so don't jump to any conclusions just yet, though having to wait even longer for this game is a scary thought.

Be sure to keep it locked to GameRevolution to stay updated on The Last of Us and all things gaming.

Best Buy is foretelling their own demise. It isn't about the game The Last of Us, it's them saying that that's when "the last of [our stores]" will be closing.

I don't know, I actually kind of like Best Buy as a consumer, but hate them as an employer. I feel bad for anyone working at Best Buy, but I really like all of their sales. Also, their net worth has been steadily dropping for a while now, and their future is dimming a bit.

Best Buy has never had a price I could not beat elsewhere. They've become a showroom for tech that consumers then buy online. Good riddance.

They have a price match that matches online retailer prices. As long as it's a new item sold by a major retailer, Best Buy will give it to you for that price. And their Black Friday deals are really awesome for big purchases.

Sorry guys, it's definitely delayed. Keep an eye out for an official announcement.

If you guys listened to the last episode of GameRevolution Radio, I spoke of The Last of Us potentially being delayed. Like all of my predictions, they come true.

You'll also see that The Last Guardian is now a PS4 title releasing sometime in 2014.

I think you are absolutely right about The Last Guardian coming to PS4 by the way.

I was about to post you mentioning that. Of course, you said you're not going to mention any names, but will you give the person credit when an announcement is made?

Good lord, how much processing power would you need to do that? A lot. More than a top-end gaming PC could provide. Plus, atop the usual PS3 glitchiness for cross-platform titles there would be emulator glitches. Just imagine playing Skyrim in that environment.

Between GTA V & Beyond: Two Souls, I think there is a little more life left in the PS3. I've barely touched mine in a year since I got back into pc gaming but that's 3 games this year that makes me glad it's more than just a media device.

I wonder if Warner Bros. is afraid of The Last of Us releasing on a Friday will steal some of the total box office sales for Man of Steel.
