The Last of Us To "Last" 12 To 16 Hours

Posted on Monday, March 18 @ 08:30:00 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

The Last of Us will take roughly 12-16 hours to complete, according to developer Naughty Dog.

The game's length was revealed in a video interview conducted by EvolveEnt in which studio employee Arne Meyer explained, “We’re definitely looking at more than 12 hours, maybe 12 to 16 right now is what we’re looking at. It really depends on how you play. You can play a little bit slower if you try to approach situations stealthy, if you really wanna explore the environment and scavenge, that’s going to add more time too.”

Are you excited for Naughty Dog's upcoming PS3-exclusive? Were you hoping the game might be a little longer, or are you content with a sub-20 hour experience? Let us know in the comments below.

It seems like it's about the right length, though when I play through it and finish, I'm going to wish it was longer. I think 20 hours would have been just right, but since they're aiming to keep the emotions and action high, it would be hard to sustain that for 20 full hours, ultimately detracting from the experience.

16 hours sounds alright. Really its the type of game that determines for me how long it should be. I expect a persona game to last me at least 50-70 hours first playthrough, a shooter can last 10-20 and i will be ok with that.

What worries me a bit is i have seen developers say how long a game will last before it comes out and then its dramatically shorter than what they said. Hope thats not the case here and we get an 8 hour game or something.

I do agree with you that a developer usually woefully overvalues the lasting experience of there product, but I think I trust Naughty Dog enough to hit these promised hours.

12 will feel short, but okay if there experience is great.

15-16 would be perfect, and if I have to play stealthy the first time through to hit it then fine

Good point. I bet a more aggressive play-through will probably only take you 12 hours, but a more methodical, stealthy approach will give you a few extra hours of value.

Sounds fine by me, I don't judge a game based on its length, but rather quality. If it is a solid game, that's multiple play throughs with different approaches. So in other words, that could be dozens of hours for me.

Twelve to sixteen hours sounds pretty reasonable. After all, the Uncharted games last around six to ten (for me at least). I'm really looking forward to this game. I agree that the game would most likely take longer to finish depending on how the player plays, e.g. spending time to find items and hidden details, using cautious and stealthy approaches etc.

It's a little light. But don't worry, I am sure some DLC will be right around the corner!!

It took me 12-16 hours to get to New Reno the first time in Fallout 2.
