The Last of Us Wins E3 Game Critics Awards

Posted on Tuesday, June 26 @ 16:08:50 Eastern by

Once again, the collective Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 2012 have been revealed. The Last of Us won five of the categories, while Dance Central 3, Halo 4, Watch_Dogs, and XCOM: Enemy Unknown took two each. The majority of wins when to Sony (7) and Microsoft (4), with Nintendo only receiving 1 award.

Special Commendations of Graphics - Star Wars 1313, Watch Dogs
Special Commendation for Sound - The Last of Us
Special Commendation for Innovation - Watch Dogs

Compared to our own Best of E3 Awards, which are not based on any categories this year, we also gave commendations to other games that were not given a Game Critics Award, including:
Tomb Raider, Borderlands 2, Dead Space 3, Assassin's Creed III, Beyond: Two Souls, Resident Evil 6, SimCity, Dishonored, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, Persona 4: Arena, and Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch.
Yeah, that's a lot...

I'm not saying that the Game Critics Awards lack importance, but I think they might need to reconsider their categorical awards so that all these awesome games aren't ignored.

I can easily see why The Last of Us cleaned up. The game was amazing. Although, I would have expected Tomb Raider to have done extremely well, too.

This is exactly why we don't use categories in our awards. There were what, two racing games at the show? Yet Need for Speed: Most Wanted walks away with an award and Tomb Raider doesn't. I'm sorry, but that's broken.

Granted, I haven't seen The Last of Us in action, but I am worried that it might end up just a re-skinned Uncharted. Not that I have anything against Uncharted, I would just like to see something different. Also, no love for Sleeping Dogs? That game looks like what GTA IV should have been. At the end of the day, my most anticipated game is still ACIII. At least until Rocksteady makes another Batman game.

Sleeping Dogs is a great game. Far better than I think anyone expected with Activision cancelling it. But it's no The Last of Us. I was afraid it was going to be too much like Uncharted, too. Aside from some cover/shoot mechanic, and the visual fidelity, it's nothing at all like it.

I prefer to see these awards categorized like this.
