The Secret World Goes "Free-To-Play" After 5 Months, Sets New Record

Posted on Wednesday, December 12 @ 12:11:34 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

Paying for things is so overrated. Especially subscription fees. Those are just silly.

Funcom has announced that The Secret World no long requires a monthly fee to play. However, a purchase of game box is required to create an account and jump into its horrific world—see what I did there?

Unlike other MMOs which have gone free-to-play recently—*cough* Star Wars: The Old Republic *cough*—no content will be restricted. However, membership is available for the continued price of $14.99 and will carry some exclusive benefits. The benefits as listed on the official site are the following:
  • 'The Time Accelerator'. This clickable item increases experience gain for defeating monsters by 100% for 1 hour and has a 16 hour cool-down. This item can only be used by Members and Grand Masters.
  • $10 worth of Bonus Points given out every month which can be used towards any product in the Item Store of The Secret World (bonus points are valid for 6 months).
  • Membership Item-of-the-month gift (given out every month).
  • 10% discount to everything in the Item Store except Content Packs or other Packs (discounts to the Item Store do not stack with other offers).
Those are some truly stupendous perks. Looks like I'll have to reinstall the game now.

I don't think they're going to come here. What can they possible say? I killed it?

Well, sure, they *could* say that. It would be a pretty idiotic thing to say, but they proved themselves to be big-time idiots when they were here last time.

Pretty sure they won't, since there's no link to here from Metacritic. You know, the site around which their entire lives revolve.

I wonder how many of the trolls who made their accounts merely to insult Mr. Leack's review are even still playing this game.

I wouldn't even play it for free. Maybe I didn't give it enough time, but playing it on the free weekend a little while back left me completely underwhelmed.

Their tag line is: Pay Once, Play Forever
Does this mean they will never take the servers down? Forever is a long time.

I was actually excited for this game but the subscription fee put me off, plus the combat & general gameplay looked pretty clunky. I like story but poor gameplay is hard to put up with, can anyone actually recommend this game?

Absolutely not. There is nobody on the planet that actually enjoys the game. If someone tells you they do then they're just trolling. Don't let them troll you.
