The Smithsonian Museum Selects The Most Important Video Games of All Time

So, did they get it right?

The famous Smithsonian American Art Museum will showcase "The Art of Video Games" (take that, Roger Ebert!) from March 16, 2010 through September 30, 2012. It will "explore the 40-year evolution of video games as an artistartistic medium, with a focus on striking visual effects, the creative use of new technologies, and the most influential artists and designers".

Through the website www.artofvideogames.org, participants voted in a two-month period for 80 games divided by era, game type, and platform. The following are the winning games and the rest that have been snubbed.

I think they completely forgot about the arcade, simulation, sports, rhythm, survival/horror, and fighting genres. And their stringent genres to Action, Adventure, Target, and Combat/Strategy cuts out some of the nominees unfairly and unnecessarily. Some of the games in the Target lose their relevance by Era 3. (Why is Psychonauts in the Action category? What not include Call of Duty anyway? DDR? Grand Theft Auto? Street Fighter? Mortal Kombat?)

Can't say I totally agree with all of these. Do we really need every Mario game to be recognized?

Looking at games as a purely artistic medium. Obviously they're going at it from a different perspective than we are. But how is Valkyria Chronicles not on here. Game looks amazing.

I can understand how God of War would get left out due to the rather gratuitous violence and nudity, but I still feel it was robbed. I can't think of a single game that looked better on the PS2, not to mention the story which at least in the first game was pretty damn good.

Ok, i AM happy they put dune 2 in there, but why on the sega genesis? It may have been graphically superior but it was the weakest of the franchise. If there's a nuclear holocaust and i seek shelter in the building, I'll probably strangle myself with the genesis controller instead. Also the lack of civilization proves the Smithsonian doesn't want to educate people.... speaking of not educating where's duke nukem?

SimCity 2000... ON THE SATURN?! syndicate on the Snes!? *tusk tusk* is there any love for the PC people here? And what happen to the PC during the first 3 era!
