LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD Sells Well Despite Poor Reception

Posted on Friday, July 27 @ 16:23:16 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

If you were to look back a month ago and tell people that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD would receive harsh critical reception most people wouldn't believe you. However, our local expert Daniel Bischoff as well as over three dozen other game critics found it to be just that: disappointing. But don't tell that to the large sum of people who have already invested in it.

Robomodo Co-Owner Josh Tsui revealed to Gamasutra that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD has already sold over 120,000 units in its first seven days post-launch. That's only including the Xbox Live version with a PC and PlayStation 3 version to come, and also discounts the "consistent" sales that have been productive after launch week.

Not every game can break six digits in its first week with a 66 Metacritic score, but is it really a surprise that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater was able to? I don't think so.

They knew it was going to sell well no matter, which might explain why they didn't try to make it better.

It's all good though, there are plenty of other versions of THPS1/2 that can be had for a cheap price. If you have a PS3 you can just ebay the PS1 version disc and it will play in the PS3. It is actually cheaper that way than buying the new HD version. THPS2X on Xbox and THPS1+2 on Dreamcast are also great choices that can be had for cheaper than buying HD.

I can't believe you mentioned Metacritic, Jonathan. Did you do this to keep those TSW lovers for not complaining about it?

I would say it was a mixed critical reception, not negative. There were some favorable reviews out there. I think alot of people just picked the game apart though and were angry about certain pro's not being in, certain songs not being in, and certain levels not being in. I played the game alot so far, and the gameplay is as tight as ever even with new physics.

I feel i got my 15 dollars worth, and see it as a step in the right direction for TH games after Ride and Shred. Glad to see its selling well.
