E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Ubisoft CEO Voices Disappointment Over Wii U Pricing

Posted on Tuesday, November 13 @ 08:00:22 Eastern by Keri_Honea

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry International, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot shares his disappointment with the Wii U price. Ubisoft has been one of the Wii U's biggest third-party supporters, but apparently one thing they can't fully support is the price. Namely, they believe that Nintendo will have to lower the price of the console.

"I always prefer lower pricing, so I can't say I'm happy," Guillemot said. "I'm never happy when the machines are expensive. What we have to do there is remember that compared to an iPad, it's cheap. With what it brings [to the gaming table] it's cheap. But I hope they'll be able to drop their price in time."

Sounds like he's afraid of another 3DS situation, or worse, Vita situation. Obviously, Nintendo won't be dropping its price now, especially with the launch this weekend. Most likely, they will wait and see how well it does during the launch weekend and throughout the holidays before making a price cutting decision. If they end up slashing the price after the first of the year due to poor sales, however, Guillemot can be left with an, "I told you so." Somehow I doubt that will give him much satisfaction.

Sure, its cheaper than iPad. But iPad doesnt charge $60.00 for its most popular games/apps. On average most are between $0.00-$2.99. When you buy 2 games with the Wii U, you are already beating the iPad's price. That being said, its a game console vs. a tablet computer, and I think the comparison is not really relevant. These two things have different purposes. I do agree that a console that is limited on its own should be reasonably priced, and I was one of the ones that got sucked into the early 3DS stage. Considering the 3DS started at a not so far off price, this is a good deal. But again, you are marketting to different gamers. I would be more appreciative of a lowered game price, but thats just me. Just wait, soon we will have some new HD like upgrade that all games have to have, and we will see Call of Duty Modern Warfare 8 at a starting price of 79.99....

Hmmm. This doesn't seem very realistic. The Xbox 360 launched at $400 and the PS3 launched at $600. And depending on which model you choose, you'd still be paying from $250 to $300 for a new one. By comparison, the basic Wii U with no frills costs $300, while $350 gets you a game and a load of extra crap. That seems like a decent price for a console on release. Not to mention, Nintendo have said that even at that price, they're selling the system for less than cost.
