LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Uncharted 3 Will Make You Buy a 3DTV, Says Dev

Posted on Friday, May 6 @ 09:03:01 Eastern by

Sony has updated the PS3's system software to support 3D games and Blu-ray playback, pledging over 30 3D games before the end of the year. Nintendo has built their latest handheld console centered around glasses-free 3D. It's clear that the video game industry is pushing 3D as the next big thing. So why isn't anyone biting?

3DS sales are good, but much less than Nintendo and analysts projected. 3DTV adoption is significantly slower than with HDTVs. Right now the technology is expensive, but more importantly, it's because there just isn't anything out there that's justifies the exorbitant price tag.

MotorStorm: Apocalypse was the first example of how 3D can elevate your enjoyment of a game. But developer Naughty Dog firmly believes that Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is going to be the game to prove just how "awesome" 3D in games can get, says Jacob Minkoff, Lead Designer on Uncharted 3:

People are only going to buy 3D when there's awesome stuff in 3D. We're making the awesome stuff that'll drive people to adopt that technology.

If you happened to read our Uncharted 3 GDC preview, you'd know that we agree. We spent a short amount of time with Uncharted 3 in 3D, and were blown away at what the team at Naughty Dog have been able to accomplish, especially the depth added to the environments and the way it assists with aiming and platforming.

Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is set to release this November exclusively on the PlayStation 3, and we'll finally get to see if it's as "awesome" as they say it will be.

    Why isn't anyone biting?

Cause its a really f*cking expensive fad that doesnt (in my opinion) add all that much to the overall experience. Plus its really f*cking expensive. You wanna have a few friends over to watch a 3D movie (or play some games), you gotta have a 200 dollar pair of those stupid glasses for everyone, plus the 2000 for the tv in the first place, vs. a 700 dollar 1080p HDTV that everyone can enjoy... hmm...

I just bought an HDTV a few years ago, I'm not about to go out and buy a new one just because someone decided that Avatar was a success because of the 3D effects. That, and I wear glasses as it is, wearing those damnable 3D contraptions over them is just plain uncomfortable. To me, it's just not worth the hassle it takes.

I've had an HDTV for like 6 years so 3D is a welcome upgrade. Avatar 3D on my TV is the most incredible thing I've ever seen. And to the first poster, you can get 3DTVs at almost the price of regular ones now. 100-200 dollars more for 3d? Yes please...
