Valve Addresses Steam Security Breach and Stolen Info

Posted on Thursday, November 10 @ 15:47:56 Eastern by Josh_Laddin
Earlier this week, Steam's forums were breached by hackers, and while that is a nuisance, it's not as bad as the database itself getting hacked. Well it turns out in a message from Valve's Gabe Newell, that yes, indeed the database was hacked. I knew it was weird that I couldn't log into Steam the other day.

At least, unlike Sony, Valve's wisely decided to show some transparency and keep its customers in the know asap. Here's what they had to say about the compromised information and what it means:

This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

Don't go freaking out just yet. The letter goes on to say that "we don't have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely." Further, they "do not know of any compromised Steam accounts." Because of this, a password change hasn't been deemed mandatory, but Valve advises it nonetheless.

Hopefully this doesn't get any worse and we don't have another PSN fiasco on our hands.

I feel relieved that my only purchase up to this point was the free Portal download, I'm SO getting their future games on stores!

See, I told you I wasn't going to keep my credit card info anywhere online. 'Cause just when you think you're safe, you get hacked.

Why suffer from such wide-spread paranoia?

It's only Paranoid when it's unfounded. I'm a careful fellow, and I've had my credit card stolen twice (The number not the physical card), and I've had three separate services I use (if I include this one now) tell me there is reason to believe my card information may have been stolen. That averages out to about once per year. Luckily, for the 3 times I was warned, I changed my card number, and for the two times someone tried to USE the number, my Bank cut them off before they spent anything.

So as far as suggesting that avoiding allowing your credit card information to be saved on someone's database is "paranoia" seems ludicrous. Seems like a good security practice to me.

I tend not to worry about my info being stolen. During the PSN hacks nothing happened and I doubt anything will happen here. Plus that's what credit card protection is for! I'm not gonna let some hackers keep me down!

Really? Going after Sony was at least initially a quasi-pro consumer thing (barely), but this? To those who did this: honestly? You just pissed off the consumers that back in the day helped VALVe catch the guy who leaked Half Life 2's source code. You just made 99% of PC users very angry, and I'm willing to bet a good number of them wear hats of black. When word leaks of who you are, there's going to be hell to pay, and the vicious Hammer Legion will be there to collect. And they hold grudges like no tomorrow. Just look at the Halo-caust of TF2.

    Enjoy the incoming retaliation.

Yarrr, we pirates don't be needing yer false moralities, arrr.

Seriously, if this hack was about stealing perosnal information and possibly credit cards, I don't think they really care who they 'piss off'. That's half their point. Yarr.

I don't even have a steam account but that was just a shitty thing to do. Valve is pretty chill for the most part.

Was this database hack around the same time as their forum breach?

If so, I already changed it. Problem solved.
