Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Wii U Is 3D Capable, But Not a Focus for Nintendo

Posted on Wednesday, July 6 @ 10:42:09 Eastern by

Long before the Wii U was announced and rumors of the touchscreen-equipped controller surfaced, there was speculation that Nintendo's next home console would be primarily focused around 3D, much like the 3DS. However, E3 came and went without even a mere mention of 3D for the new console.

Nintendo is now saying that the Wii U is "technologically" capable of 3D, but it won't be a main focal point of the console due to the slow adoption rate of 3DTVs.

If you are going to connect Wii U with a home TV capable of displaying 3D images, technologically, yes, it is going to be possible, but that's not the area we are focusing on...

Said Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo.

... When it comes to the home console, it depends upon the availability of 3D TV sets at home, which, unfortunately, is not expanding enough. And rather than pouring a lot of energy into that kind of area, with the Wii U we'd like to focus more on each Wii U owner being able to have an equal opportunity to enjoy it.

Maybe we'll see a glasses-free Wii U controller in the future to go with the 3DTV?

While we're on the topic, how about a show of hands comments from those of you who have or plan to purchase a 3DTV before the end of the year.

Do I have a 3D capable tv? Yes. Do I plan on using the 3D functionality any time soon? No. Why, you ask? Because the 3D glasses that work with it cost almost $80 each. Yeah, not worth it.

Isn't there also a major lack of content + all the consumer health reports that a large % of people can't enjoy 3d/physically can't perceive it + content (sports specifically) not being nearly as cool 3d as movies that are designed around 3d? That's the reason I won't be buying into the fad, at least until the TV's/peripherals are reasonably priced.

Isn't this also why the Wii didn't have HD.

    Hmm...

3D T.V.'s are, for me at least, another gimmick to get us to keep buying televisions when we don't need them. The HD TV adoption rate is still not as high as it could be, keeping television content still mostly broadcast in SD with the possible option of HD, not the other way around. We can't even get up to speed on a single new format, let alone leapfrog to an even more expensive, cutting edge technology.

Also, 3D tv's suck for people who have glasses. You can put the glasses over top of your regular glasses, but it's uncomfortable and bulky.

Add the fact that I can't have a bunch of friends over to watch the same movie (lest I want to shell out a small fortune) and 3D tv's keep sounding worse and worse. Make HD T.V.'s more affordable, shelve the 3D till we don't need ridiculous glasses and wait for the market to catch up. This 3D push is supremely annoying.

I won't be getting a 3D TV any time soon. Primarily because 3D pictures tend to give me a headache.
