Wii U Virtual Console Coming This Spring, Wind Waker HD Coming This Fall [Update: Screenshots Inside]

Posted on Wednesday, January 23 @ 18:43:35 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

[UPDATE]: Be sure to check out all of the gorgeous images (like the one above) over at our Wind Waker screenshot gallery.

Fans of the cel-shaded GameCube classic, rejoice! For Nintendo has revealed that this fall they will be launching a new and improved version of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker for Wii U.

The announcement was made during today's Nintendo Direct in which we learned that this updated version of the game will feature overhauled graphics, Miiverse support, and the ability to play on the GamePad. Don't worry, the gorgeous art style will remain intact; it will just feature some added visual enhancements like improved lighting effects.

Isn't it pretty?

In addition, Nintendo also announced that the Wii U Virtual Console will be launching this spring. So those of you eager to play some of the classics on the GamePad don't have a whole lot of waiting left to do.

I don't know about you, but it's now becoming increasingly difficult to hold off on purchasing a Wii U.

Know what's ironic? I remember EGM made an April Fools prank by showing off an HD Wind Waker. Funny how things turn out but I do hope this HD remake will do more than just update the visuals.

Is it going to be vastly improved in the sense of new material, or just new visuals? Because Wind Waker hasn't aged, like, at all.

I got this bad itch here. Like this premonition that Nintendo will remove the cell shading...

Well we can't really expect much from this remake. From looking at it, it's clear that what they did was update the original models in lighting and texture, while adding more geometry to create a bit more detail to the models. This explains why the game is coming out so quickly, simply taking an already made game, and updating the lighting, textures, geometry, as well as adding things like ambient occlusion and anti-aliasing, then rendering it in a higher resolution is practically effortless if you know what you're doing. Especially with a game like Wind Waker that has a low poly count.

I kinda hope they also add more content to the game, but one can dream.

I will be very disappointed if they don't re-do the Tingle Tuner to take advantage of the Wii U screen. Seriously, it may have been a totally useless option but it was a neat idea all the same.

I'll probably get much hate, but I am incredibly unimpressed at the thought of an HD remake of a Cell Shaded game.

No, kinda right there with you - but I'm going to give it a chance. Bare in mind I've never touched a Zelda related game so my expectations are low. Agreed, in the age of AC3 and Crysis we should be trying to raise the gaming bar, but hopefully they make it expansive in other ways.

"it's now becoming increasingly difficult to hold off on purchasing a Wii U."

Words have never been so true. I could justify a Wii U purchase just for an HD windwaker. Prob my favorite Zelda.

Apparently there were supposed to be 2 extra dungeons in wind waker that were scrapped in place of that mundane triforce shard collecting garbage toward the end. If they add dungeons an remove that fetch quest this remake will be amazing.
