Will You Play Story, Action, or RPG Mode in Mass Effect 3?

Posted on Wednesday, January 11 @ 12:08:58 Eastern by

Speaking with Game Informer, Bioware Executive Producer Casey Hudson, man in charge of all things Mass Effect, a man many of you might want to kill after the changes in Mass Effect 2, the man who has ruined all other men for you.... Sorry... an Office reference slipped in there.

Anyways, Hudson has said to Game Informer of Mass Effect 3's Story, Action, and RPG game modes:

You have to make a game with a certain design before you realize that there are different player types. One of the surprising pieces of feedback was for some player, it's not that they don't like the story. They love story. In fact, the story is so important to them that they feel the story choices are intimidating.

So all these setting do is that they set some of the options on the option screen before you've played it and know what those options mean. Once you get in and start playing, you can change things.

If you choose Story Mode, Mass Effect 3 will automatically dumb down the action sequences. If you choose Action Mode, the game will choose dialog automatically. RPG Mode? Well, you can guess where that takes the player.

This. If I want more action, I'll just play one of the other 7,000,000 action titles out there.

Exactly. Take a game for what is it. You want a different experience? Play a different game.

I hear the sound of a thousand sandy vaginas crying out in unison. It's a glorious sound. I hope the next Mass Effect is a first-person shooter, so that while I'm enjoying it, I can enjoy the chorus of high-pitched whiners.

    Rock on, Bioware, rock on.

This post is moronic. If you want mass effect to be a first person shooter your playing the wrong game. Sounds like the sand is in your vagina toots.

The amazing part is you actually think I want it to be an FPS. The point of the post is I don't freakin' care what they do with it, at all, as long as its a good game and remains that way. Your post just proved my point, anyway. Good job.

However, some people cannot deal with any change to the formula, they ***** and moan about every little change. You're pretty perceptive, buddy. Now **** off, would you kindly?

Why is it amazing I thought you wanted an FPS, you said those exact words. Don't try so hard to be clever and your posts might end up saying what you actually mean. Gee, can you imagine?

I'm sorry all you RPG and action maniacs here, but the only thing that drives me into mass effect is the story. I want to know more about the geth, the races, what a quarian look like, how sexy is a turian female, what does ceberus REALLY want and what's up with the reapers?

And best of all... you are part of that story, thanks to Sheppard. RPG and action be damned!

RPG mode all the way, for every one of my multiple playthroughs too. I think the mode options are just to make the game more accessible. RPG mode is for normal people, Action mode is for idiots, and Story mode is for.......the Japanese?

I like how the gaming community has matured greatly over the years, and how we're so accepting of people who don't like the things we do.

"Action mode is for idiots" indeed.

I am actually shocked that someone would want to make automatic dialogue choices. Wasn't the big draw of Mass Effect that you could make your own decisions with actual voiced dialogue, that the choice on what to do was ultimately yours?

I thought that initially too, then I realized, what if I want to make the choices I've made in the previous game decide everything for me, and see how it turns out? That could be neat.

Hudson apparently told the interviewer that many, I'm guessing more laid back players, were turned off from making decisions because they thought they'd be making incorrect ones.

But there really aren't any "incorrect" decisions, just different outcomes. Action mode, to me, is like saying "I want to play Modern Warfare 3, but I'd really prefer that the game shoot people for me automatically."

To me this should be the case:

Action mode = in combat, headshots are instant kill (on most targets) and cleverly directed shots cause huge damage to certain foes - stats have less impact on combat, skill and correct use of bionics make you a good fighter.

RPG mode = you need to balance your inventory, upgrade weapons, develop a strong counter-strategy for each opponent and hit them with the right weapons, slight bonuses apply for headshots/crits.

and in both cases above Story plays out as normal - the choices are part of the fun surely?

Story mode - all the combat sequences are super easy, most enemies go down after a couple of hits and don't use cover.

Doesn't game difficulty do a lot of that already, with easy settings making combat faster and hard settings emphasizing combat more?

Yeah other than the dialogue choices being automatic this sounds like what the difficulty levels do. Unless the different modes are going to be totally not what we all think

I love how condescending some.of you are being. It's such a positive experience.

RPG mode better be the game without any dumbed down action or chosen for you dialogue, which I'm sure it will be but still...I'm a little apprehensive.

I rather like the idea behind this. I can't fathom why somebody would pick action mode, but I know a few people who inexplicably will. RPG Mode, if it's what is implied, will likely be used in my first playthrough. Story Mode will then be a viable and quick alternative for subsequent playthroughs done just to see how my choices affect the game. Very nice!
